Here.
Hello,

I having installed windows 8 (selected keep nothing in setup) everything is great so far except that i get stuck at 'Loading operating system' during boot.

I have waited for ten mins and nothing happened. I then rebooted with the setup DVD in the drive and it booted okay from that, so I know my configuration is fine is fine.

I'm sure its something silly like the old Fdisk/mbr command would have sorted back in the XP days but this is a new beast and i really don't want to have to re-install (again) as everything works great.

possible useful info:
My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 running a (stock speed) I5 2500k. I have 12GB of RAM with a 1TB drive (its a spinner, i have no SSD yet)

I cant think of anything else that maybe relevant.

any help would be regretfully received on this.

thanks :)

Hey buddy :)

I hope you understand when I say that I am REALLY pleased that you're having the same problem. makes me feel less alone on this one. I was starting to worry that it was one of those strange things that no one else ever encounters. xD

I have checked every BIOS setting and the Hard drive manager snap-in in Admin tools with no luck. Everything on my system indicates that is SHOULD boot fine.

At this point I am starting to think that the windows 8 bootloader is buggy because nothing else seems to be wrong. Unless someone can think of something im going to have to contact Microsoft I think (and no one wants to do that lol)

Made a post a while back, thinking it is a death of a Windows OS for it. Lost the product key, and a fresh install may help. Ubuntu?

I'll be poking around later, I have upgraded 2 PC's so far and the 3rd is the one with the error. Hope you find an answer, we're both pretty stuck.

Interesting. I'd copy over the DVD to a USB, boot from that, but first disable all other SATA devices, plug your HDD into SATA_0, flash the latest BIOS and then fresh clean format. Then look at the BIOS, what does it say? Windows' bootloader is in?

The problem goes on....

I have now tried the windows 8 DVD 'fix and repair' menu' and automatic repair can find nothing wrong with my machine. I can boot form any device i try (live ubuntu cd's, memory cards and USB drives) but i can not get my windows 8 install to boot without the DVD in the drive.

I am assuming it HAS TO BE a motherboard or settings issue. any thoughts guys?

Did you run the upgrade assistant on the machine you are upgrading?

Is NX switched on in your motherboard bios?

SOLVED!!!!

I opened up my machine an it turns out my hard drive was plugged in to SATA 2, with my second in SATA 3 and my DVD drive in SATA 4, ports one and two are in a different place on the M/B. odd that its never cased an issue in the past but once i put my drives in 1 and 2 it worked fine :)

Thanks for all the help guys.

also: i took out the extra drive cage in my PC while it was open and that left more space and better air flow so it was all worth it in the end.
