Okay, so I know that if you want to install Windows 8 Pro, which I want, you need to have Windows 7 installed, in my case Windows 7 Ultimate, or any previous version of Windows. I must admit that all the versions of Windows I've used so far were pirated, including the one I'm currently running. I also have a genuine version of Windows 7 Ultimate, but without a license key. So, if I install that Windows 7 Ultimate but not activate it because of obvious reasons, can I upgrade it to Windows 8 Pro and manage to activate it? I don't think it will work because Windows 8 Pro has to detect an activated operating system with a valid key, hasn't it? I want to become a good person and stop using pirated software by buying Microsoft's Windows 8 Pro and repaying them for the work they did in the same time. Not really, but it's cheap, so why not? I could always buy the OEM version, but that will not happen as the price is too high. Why pay so much for an operating system, when I can go and visit Greece with the money I save! Anyway, do you think my method will work?

In my case, I needed to re-install Win 7 Pro on my machine prior to upgrading it to Win 8. I installed it but got an activation error when I attempted to activate it. I didn't feel like going thru the telephone activation process at the time so just proceeded with the upgrade to Win 8 fully expecting that the installer would see that I was attempting to upgrade an un-activated copy and refuse to install. To my surprise, the Win 8 install completed without a hitch and activated fine.
