I bought the $39 Windows 8 Pro X64, did the download, created the .iso file and burned a DVD using ImgBurn at 4X. Install fails with Windows 8 instal fails 0X80070017 error. Left the computer non-working since it set the I: drive as Active and when the install canceled it would not boot. Had to use my Win 7 DVD and run Startup Repair a few times to fix it. Seems to me it would be a good idea for the installer to remember which partition was Active when the install started then if it fails, make it active again before rebooting. That would at least leave you with a useable system.

I just created a Win 8 bootable flash drive from the same .iso file and will try it from there. If that work how do I get a good DVD to keep for the future and know it's any good? I can try a different computer and DVD burner, any other ideas?

Are trying to dual boot?
Windows 8 boot files need to be on the same active drive as Windows 7.

Yes, I have Win 7 on a 128GB SSD, which has a 157MB System Reserved first then the Win 7 partition. Win 8 is the 4th partition on a 1.2TB SATA drive. All works well.

I was wrong about the active setting, it was not changed. The install from a Flash drive worked perfectly and once it finished I installed EasyBCD and set Win 7 as the default boot OS for now, so everything works as it did before and I can take my time working up Win 8. I replaced the Win 8 Customer Preview with the released version and so far all is well.

Just need to figure out how to burn a good Win 8 DVD, though installing from a flash drive is a whole lot faster.
