Windows 8 Pro install via media queries

I just purchased Windows 8 Pro and I am downloading the files via the Upgrade assistant. After downloading, I wish to install Windows 8 without deleting my personal files and applications of Windows 7.

Here are some questions related to it which I have:

1. If I create a bootable pendrive and install Windows 8, will I still be able to restore all my applications and files?
2. After creating a bootable pendrive, how can I make a bootable DVD out of it?

Thank you.

Regards,
Abhishek Sharma

1. If you install by booting the media , that is not the same as an upgrade install. You should get the option to save your existing partition content into a folder called Windows.old.

Your stuff will be in there - but you will need to reinstall programs ( except those that run portably)

2. The easiest thing is to say yes to making an .iso.

Then you can burn that to dvd and /or put it on a flash drive.

Useful tool for that is Poweriso . The free (unregistered ) version will be fine

Just d/l from here and you will get the unregistered version PowerISO - Create, Burn, Mount, Edit, Compress, Encrypt, Split, Extract ISO file, ISO/BIN converter, Virtual Drive

So do you mean to say that if I create a bootable pendrive I will lose all my third party applications?

No, not by creating the pendrive.

Installing by booting the pendrive does not let you do an "upgrade" type of installtion.

( Not unless they have added that in as a new option and I haven't noticed.)

If you wan to do an upgrade install - run setup.exe from withion your existing windows.

If I were you, I would make an image of your existing installation first - in case you wan to go back to it.

Plenty of free progs will do that for you.

Macrium free is popular ( free version does not support gpt ). Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

Paragon do a free one as well. ( does support gpt ) Free Hard Drive Backup Software: Paragon Backup & Recovery Free Edition - Full Features & System Requirements

Did you mean the Upgrade Assistant itself? I can't figure out what you meant by setup.exe!
