Question | clean install...

I installed the upgrade at 15$ after formatting the primary drive and not on Windows 7. I wanted to know Does it matter if I installed the windows 8 upgrade on a clean drive and not the previous system?

I ask this because after installation the system did not recognize the product key because I installed the upgrade on the drive without a previous version of windows 7. And to solve it I had to call Microsoft to do the activation.
1. Why is this happening ? (don't recognize the key)
2. Is every time I will be installing it I have to call them to make activation?

Sorry for the English guys, and thanks.

Most likely busy activation server.

From what I understand from Microsoft that because I did upgrade the drive system is clean, it makes sense?

There is someone else who installed a clean install after formatting that the system don't approve the product key ?

Yes exactly the problem that I have
So what should be done to solve the problem except for communicating Microsoft and tell them to activate,
And why have the option to install on a clean drive if it does not approve the legality of the product?

From everything I have read, the upgrade disc will not load to a 100% blank hard drive. When you attempt to put in the product key, it will say, "hey, this is intended only as an upgrade" and it will stop.

People seem to be working around having a previous OS with the following 2 methods
#1). Load the Windows 8 enterprise eval. Then, run the upgrade, choose clean install
#2). Load Windows 7 without entering a key, leaving it in 30 day grace period. Upgrade this, choose clean install.

I would not condone using either of these 2 methods, unless you have a valid OS that is activated and paid for that you are upgrading now. If down the road, on the same machine, you need to reinstall, I think the above 2 methods are acceptable since you are just doing it to save yourself time.

But in the event that you are building a brand new machine with no OS, the legal RIGHT way to do this is by buying the System Builder license.

Agree with pparks1,

The System Builder is what you would need if you are building a system or replacing the hard drive with nothing on it. Like pparks1 mentioned there workarounds but those are in the gray area....

If you have a previous OS that has XP, Vista or 7 on it, you can do a clean install by following this guide:

Hope this Helps.

Computer also came with the system, windows 7. just before the upgrade I format the hard drive and installed the Windows 8 via usb.
I'm guessing that the only way is to call to the local Microsoft support and ask them to do activation again.

The question is why Microsoft's phone service agree to activate and make it legal. Although after installing a clean system, the system does not allow to use the product key, it sounds weird I missed something?

Thanks again for the help.

I downloaded Windows 8 upgrade on Windows 7 Ultimate (no-RAID), then used Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99
and prepared USB installation flash drive (It was created MediaMeta.xml activation file on this flash drive). Then made clean installation of Windows 8 on brand new PC (RAID0). I saw that widows 8 was not activated. After that I used "reset system" function.
The "traces of old system" appeared. And Windows 8 was activated.
So the activation was done automatically, no calls, no using previous Windows 7 key. Then you have just delete "windows.old" file.
