Hi there, downloaded Windows 8 earlier and it won't install, here is a log with the error I'm getting. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it. I've tried clicking the install button from the Install Windows option, from a USB and burned it to a DVD(the slowest burn I could do) and all of them give me the same error

My system specs are

Intel QX6700
Evga 680i
ATI 6950
Sandisk Extreme 240GB SSD
8GB RAM
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
2 x Western Digital Red 3TB
1 x Western Digital Green 2TB
Plextor PX-760A DVD writer
LG GGW-H20L Blu Ray Reader/writer
USB 3.0 PCIe card
E-MU 1212m

I've copied and pasted the contents of setupact.log below

Basically right at the end, everything seems to install and it looks like the installation is just finishing off and this error message comes up. Also I should mention I'm not doing a clean install, am choosing to keep files, settings and programs

this is why you always do a clean reinstall of any OS. i do at least 4 a year just to make sure i don't have any malware lurking. should hopefully be doing it less with Win8 but still, as a PC owner, this is analogous to getting an oil change in your car every 5,000 miles.

True, literally just installed everything about a month ago so really couldn't be bothered going through all that again so I was trying to take the easy option but I think I might have to do a clean install to get around it! Always do clean installs otherwise but I am just being lazy this time, though I hope this error doesn't come up once I've wiped my PC, then I'll really be annoyed!

you have a lot of HD in this build and 2 GPU from different manufacturer

We never install Windows with multi-hd connected on a pc.

you have to unplug all the HD except the one where you will install Windows 8
you have to install Windows 8 with only 1 Video card

after update all the drivers ( video one included) and install your second video ( all true I don't see why mix and ATI and Nvidia )
and then connect your other HD

Thanks mate, I'll try that tonight. I only have the one GPU in my PC and that is the ATI 6950, is it saying something different in my log?

@dasbudd, you might want to post your log so can see what is causing it.

Jazz sorry I miss read your first post , the EVGA 680i motherboard , I read it as a GTX 680 , lol , but still always install windows with only 1 disk

from your log :

"BootSectorRestoreCheckpoint: no MBR sector ne"

i can't read the rest but it's seems I was right with the disks,

and also you log mention a windows on a x:\ drive

is this a upgrade or fresh install you try to do ?, from your log it create a old windows directory

I think I might have figured my issue out, for some reason the Bootmgr wasn't stored on my main SSD but on my storage hard drive. So when I disconnected them all of them out except the SSD Windows wouldn't start. So what I've done is restarted with the drive in, gone into Computer management and made my main Windows drive active, then gone into an elevated Command Prompt and made the other drive inactive. Then restarted comp with the other drive out, put my windows 7 DVD in my drive and then repaired my start up. That seems to allow me now to boot into windows with all my drives out. In Disk Manager it was showing the Storage drive as Healthy (System, Active), whereas my SSD had Healthy(Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Now the SSD has all the above but also System and active!

I hope this will now work so I will keep you updated! I'll probably do this tomorrow now as I got to get up early tomorrow and I'll stay up all night trying to fix it if I encounter another issue!!

Always made my own computers but lesson learned from area 66 about only installing Windows with your main drive in! Thanks for the advice mate.
