I had installed Windows 8 Release Preview with Media Center using a serial microsoft has given. Now I want to try the RTM (pro 8) and although I used the hack to let me upgrade while keeping APPS, when I pass that point it gives me this error.

Windows 8 Release Preview with Media Center cannot be upgraded to Windows 8 Pro.

Is there a way to bypass it? From what I understand this is because of the media center, uninstalled it but the serial remains in memory as Windows 8 release preview with media center. How can I disable this and revert it to a simple release preview so I can than upgrade to Windows 8 pro without having to do clean install and Reinstalling ALL the programs I have?

Ever find out an answer to this? Im having the same issue. I did the cversion.ini tweak but it wont let me upgrade. Thanks to your post I realized it was because of the media center addon.

O you got lucky
Change this and it will work

Save this to a .reg file or change it yourself and it will let you upgrade

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion] "EditionID"="Professional"

Anyways I did this tweak and updated both of my computers to rtm from release preview. It works flawlessly. Also, I purchased windows media center for $10 from the play store. EVerything works great
