Upgrade Confusion II

I have a question about the upgrade versions:

I may build an extra PC. We have an old laptop from Toshiba that is no longer functional, but it does have the serial key from XP. Since that key is no longer used, can I use it to load XP on a system and then upgrade it to Win 8?

What I am not sure of is the fact that the Win XP serial comes with the Toshiba. Is there any reason that it would not work on a self-built system?

Thanks again,
Rod

Thinking more about it, does anyone know if the Windows 8 Upgrade Adviser will tell you if your version of Windows is legit?
If the Win XP from Toshiba is not accepted, will it tell me before I spend the $40?

I believe you should be able to load your xp serial on to another machine, don't think branding will make a difference unless the OS had been modified for said brand.

And yes I would think that the Windows 8 advisor will confirm if your copy of previous windows is legit or not.

this article might help : Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99

If your XP OS came installed on your Laptop it is an OEM version and is locked to that unit so the key is only good on that unit.

Don't hold me to this, but I believe if you use the Windows 8 upgrade a previous version of Windows has to be installed. Very annoying, but because of this I decided to spend the extra cash and just get the OEM version to be safe.

Just FYI for anyone interested:
NewEgg has a promo for Win8 with $69.99 for the Full OEM version and $109.99 for Win8 Pro. Not the upgrades, the full version.

Yes... but it's with a promo code. Windows 8 CORE is EMCJNJA83. Windows 8 Pro is EMCJNJA87.

This really is a great deal, however I will be keeping my order with Amazon for one simple reason: it will be delivered to me on Sat. I'm using a non-activated version, which will go into an extremely limited mode, on the 27th and I need a copy to activate. So I could pay for next day delivery with NewEgg bringing my total to $90 but then I'd get it Monday, or I keep my order with Amazon for $103 and get it delivered Sat.

But, if I wasn't under the pressure of the OS going into cripple mode, I'd definitely go with the NewEgg deal. (Hopefully Amazon will match before they ship.)
