Is it possible to upgrade from Windows 7 32 bit to Windows 8 64 bit?

There's a language difficulty here.

It is not possible to do an upgrade-in-place from any 32 bit version of Windows to a 64 bit one. An upgrade-in-place preserves most settings and installed programs.

However, a 32 bit version may qualify for the use of an upgrade license, which would have to be used to perform a clean install. Win 8 offers an option that's new, compared to older OSes: it can keep user files, even if everything else is eliminated. Whether that would apply here, I don't know.

Thanks guys, I figured it was a non starter. How about if I do a dual boot install 7 32 bit & 8? Can the 8 dual boot be 64 bit? It would be a clean install on a dedicated partition.

That's great thanks. Now can you help with this one? I have downloaded 8RP and 7 USB Download Tool. When I try to create a bootable thumb drive using this program and the downloaded 8RP it tells me that this is not a "Valid ISO file". Any suggestions please?

Thank you Brink, I'm in the process of downloading it again thinking that may be the problem. I use the Firefox default download manager which normally does not give me any problems. At 155 KB/sec it's going to take hours so I off to bed while it downloads.

Thanks to all you guys for your support, knowing this knowledge base is available is very comforting.

I hope that will work.

It didn't, I downloaded from your link overnight, tried to install on a thumb drive this morning and got the same result "Not a valid ISO file" This time I downloaded the 64 bit version so I know it's a different file???

Hmm, not sure why it's giving you that. As a test, try using the free program below to create a bootable USB from the ISO instead to see how it works with it.

Again my thanks Brink but, no joy. I downloaded and installed the program and tried it with both ISO files it gave me "Invalid data type for 'NoDriveTypeAutoRun'

Odd. That error would be for the USB. Try using the clean command on the USB, create a new "simple volume" to format the USB, and try burning the ISO to the USB again.

That did not work either. I tried to clean two thumb drives but got "Disk part has encountered an error: Access is denied" for both drives. I then tried it in another USB socket and got access and cleaned the thumb drive. Now I cannot format the drive through windows and ISO to USB tells me that it is an invalid drive.

Sounds like an issue with your USB flash drives.

Do they have write protection? Some have switches to turn write protection on/off with.

Are you able to use the USB normally in Windows 7 to copy files on it?

I have never had a problem before using these drives with Windows 7. I have now managed to format three thumb drives with no problem. I was pressed for time before and probably did not do it correctly. They are both working OK now.

It is interesting that with ISO to USB I get the "Invalid data type for NoDriveTypeAutoRun and the program hangs. With the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool I get the "selected file is not an ISO file. Select a valid ISO file and try again." I get this with both ISO files, 32 and 64 bit.

The 64 bit file is larger than the 32 bit file but in Explorer they show as 2,024,842 KB for 32 bit and 1,412,484 KB for the 64 bit. To me this seems to indicate that the 64 bit did not fully download? If the computer goes into power saving mode while the download is in progress, will this affect the download?

Is there any way to check the integrity of these files?

I didn't find my .iso of the 64 bit Enterprise Evaluation copy, but the RP was well over 3GB in size. I believe that both the 32 and 64 bit downloads were incomplete.

There may be hash codes (checksums) available for the downloads, but I don't have an MSDN account (or any of the others that offer the RTM version) available for exploration.

Canuck,

The sizes for the ISO files are not correct. As Bob posted, they were not complete downloads and were interrupted as some point.

You should temporarily turn off any power saving options that cause your computer to power down until the download has completed.

Good morning Shawn. I apologize for not using your name before, I'm a little slow sometimes:roflmao:

I did as you suggested and it seems to have worked. The new download for the 64 bit is 3,433,304KB which is now loading onto a thumb drive through 7 USB/DVD. Keep your fingers crossed.
