So, that link is for sandy/ivy bridges, but according to release notes, it must be for most intel graphic chipsets, so wtf ??? Ok, i get it, as mentioned in release notes : "For other platforms referenced in the table below, the driver is available with the Windows 8 Release Preview build (in-box drivers)..." which means, that for first generation and older graphic chipsets intel doesnt have any drivers for win 8, so you will not have opengl support and games performance will be disaster...
Plus, i hate when people dont write full names, i.e., "Latest Intel HD Graphics Driver for Windows 8", but it actually means intel hd 2000/3000/4000 graphics, because "Intel HD Graphics" already is full name of the first generation intel processor graphics, so you just cant understand what they really mean by saying that ...

^This, it's always a disappointment downloading these and then finding out they don't install on the first gen core I processors.
Intel, I am dissapoint.

Besides, reading the thread.... looks like these are not drivers for Intel HD Graphics, but specifically for Ivy/Sandy Bridge chipsets.

Is there a W8 Driver for X3100 graphics? I ask, because WEI fails on 3D Texture Load... was hoping updating graphics drivers would fix it.

What computer are you putting the driver on?
You may want to check the OEM support site if it is an OEM computer.

To get from the Intel site you need to know your chipset model number.

There may be no Windows 8 graphics for older chipsets, you can try installing in compatibility mode - Windows 7.

For example:

I have a Dell Studio 1569 laptop with a 1st Gen. Core i5 that has the 1st. gen. Intel HD graphics.

The Windows 7 driver had Open GL 1.4 support but this half-baked Windows 8 driver does not and I need it for a (non-game) app.

Anything I can do? Will the Windows 7 driver work?

Thanks,

Thanks but nope, been there - done that.

Intel's recommendation is to use the Microsoft supplied driver for the 1st generation Core chipset.

The Windows 8 drivers are for the 2nd and 3rd generation (hd 2000/3000/4000 graphics) only. The "Intel HD Graphics" already is full name of the first generation.

Will the older Windows 7 driver (the had proper OpenGL 1.4 support) work? Might the 2nd generation driver work?

If not, who's going too develop a complete driver? Microsoft, Intel or nobody?

The Dell site is absolutely no help whatsoever. You'd think this was an XP laptop from 2004 as far as they are concerned.

This Windows 8 release really seems rushed, incomplete and half-baked. It took me forever to configure it properly for this laptop. (which is not THAT old for crying out loud, just 2 and a half years).

I originally did the upgrade install which seemed to work until the first Windows Update bricked it and I had to do a "Refresh" which deleted all of my applications.

Try and use the older driver, my older Dell Studio 1737 laptop runs fine on the Win8 MS supplied Intel driver.

From Device Manager - Display adapters:
Mobile Intel(R) 4 series Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1)
Properties - Driver tab:
Driver Provider: Intel
Driver Date: 3/24/2012
Driver Version: 8.15.10.2702
*WDDM is Windows Display Driver Model
It is an Intel driver.

You have to match the driver with the Intel chipset in your laptop.

I installed the Win8 RP, CP and Win8 Pro upgrade via custom/clean install, on my laptop, let the installer load all the drivers and have had no issues.
I've had Win8 on the laptop since the RP was released.

Right, the "WDDM 1.1" is the driver I am using and it is working fine EXCEPT it does not support OpenGL v1.4 where the Windows 7 driver did.

Would it be safe to try loading the Windows 7 driver?

WDDM 1.1 isn't a driver, it's a MS standard to ensure driver stability.

You can try installing the Win7 driver, if it doesn't install then try compatibility mode.

Solved!

I received my free Windows 8 Media Center key and installed it.

Once it was installed, I noticed a tile way on the far right of the interface formerly known as Metro called "OpenGL Extensions".

I clicked on that and it installed OpenGL 2.1 on the Intel video driver and the app that needed OpenGL support now works fine.
