this issue has been solved for some time now.
Take note that the HP Support Assistant shows both the Intel and AMD graphics are working properly. Make note of the of the refresh rate for the AMD GPU. The Catalyst Control Center, which it the key to graphics switching is installed and accessible both in Dynamic Switching Mode and Fixed Mode.
Can we just call it solved? If anyone is experiencing overheating, it may be due to their HP Coolsense software not working or missing.
I came across this on an HP Support Forum site. Can you believe how arrogant this HP support rep is?

Re: Switchable Graphic Drivers Not Installing On Win 8

You've got a car which has been running perfectly. Now a new type of fuel
comes in and you pour it to your car then your car stops. Who is at fault ? The
car manufacturer, the fuel developer or yourself ?
Back to Windows 8 business. I've posted few warnings about this: vendors, all
of them, will release drivers for their products, hopefully sometimes next month
(October 2012) or may be this month. Not all products will be in their lists,
some may miss out.
Hope this makes sense.

Well your kinda getting ahead of me homes, I do not have W8 installed as yet, I won't mess with it until I have this driver d/l, I have only dialup ISP and have to wait for somebody. For now I still have my W7.
OK well as far as I know, from what the other guy said when he installed this driver (sp58815) is that it did show his correct card, so I dono, also remember this stuff seems to be as fluid as quick sliver, things seem to be changing daily, so all you can do is keep eye on what people are trying and what they report, and hopefully its for real, and not BS.
Other than that its just a waiting game to see who drops the 1st actual working driver, without the user having to be the end point driver developer , know what I mean.
Its a pain trying to make heads or tails out of all the different drivers being posted, and most don't say what type of model or gpu/apu specs they have, to make a good decision, so I don't/wouldn't mess with anything that isn't being installed on the same hardware as I have.
If you have W8 installed, and your hardware matches what I said, you can try that one, just make a full image backup, or make sure you have a good restore point set.
I'm still trying to find out to what model that sp58818 actually came from, all I have is the link to the download.
Here is a new driver for this card 7690m xt, posted on notebook review today.
For Windows 8 (64 bit)
funny though that there is nothing showing up in the driver support page for my dv7t-6c00 yet for updated graphics drivers. These are from notebook review.
I'm still wondering though since the sp59147 had already been posted I didn't see many having much success, but the sp58815 one did (for W8) funny but we'll see how things go.

Sorry, but I'm hopelessly confused ( at the end of a virus, which doesn't help)
I have a dv7-4283cl
Radeon 6300 series and Intel(R)HD Graphics
I upgraded (questionable terminology) to Windows 8 last week...worked fine for a couple days, then graphics started acting up...desktop page freezing after sleep and/or hibernation, displaying only a few icons and no program windows (not even control panel). I've uninstalled, reinstalled HP's drivers, which are for Windows 7. Got it working, turned off hibernate and sleep (I thought) but the problem persists.
It's also near impossible to boot into safe mode...it keeps going to automatic repair. When I can, if I uninstall the AMD driver I'm able to boot to Windows, but I get a message that Catalyst needs Attention, then I lose many icons and am basically stuck.
BTW, booting through to Windows gets me to a blank screen where I can hear Windows start, but only see my wireless mouse icon. HP support refuses to help unless I Recover To 7. I've been reading the thread, but am confused as to what drivers might solve my issues. Is there a clear explanation somewhere I'm missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated...this forum seems full of knowledgable, friendly and helpful people - a godsend. I'm in bed on my Ipad getting ready to sleep off this virus, but will be back on my laptop first thing in the morning.
Thanks in advance, and don't worry, it's a human virus...
When I try to install the HPdriver, I get "faled to load detection driver". Also, when I can get into Windows 8, I can't find Catalyst to uninstall it. I don't have much time anyway before it freezes.
Talked to Microsoft support for 2 1/2 hrs. Was able to delete Catalyst, tried installing HP driver which worked before, but it wouldn't recognize hardware. Also tried AMD site drivers. Kept going to black screen but the support tech could see my computer on hers. Couldn't be resolved - she left me with the Intel driver enabled...AMD unenabled. Said there's a conflict. Have to refresh icons and lost my background. I'll keep looking.
The switchable graphics card drivers that will work from HP. The only thing that I had to do, was disable the intel card side and install the Radeon card drivers and catalyst then restart your PC. You might have to play with it a couple times but that is what I found that worked for me and it is using HP drivers that ended up being Radeon (TM) HD 6770M that installed and worked fine and it was the newest drivers on this link below and it downloads via FTP straight from HP site.
