Intel HD Graphics - Display Power Saving Technology

Ok, this is driving me a little crazy. I've posted on the Intel forums, thought I'd make a thread here as well.

This concerns an Acer Aspire V Nitro laptop, which comes with an Intel HD Graphics 4600 card.

My issue is with the stupid adaptive brightness feature, which supposedly automatically adjusts the brightness of my display according to the "ambient" light levels.

I. Hate. It.

I turned off the setting from the Windows control panel, for both Power Saver and High Performance plans, and for both Battery and Plugged In situations.

Issue persists.

The Display Power Saving Technology setting in the Intel Control Panel fixes it, but it keeps getting turned back on everytime I plug or unplug my laptop.

Any solutions?
I'm running fully updated Windows 8.1 x64.

Many Thanks.

Adaptive Brightness setting is OFF for my power plans. I'm positive the Intel one is at fault, cause I can literally see the brightness increase when I keep going back in to turn Display Saving Technology option off.

I don't seem to have that service in the list. Perhaps because I turned it off from the Windows Control Panel?

How to turn off "intel display power saving technology" - Laptop Video Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

I recommend making sure the graphics drivers are updated to the very latest from the Dell website, as it may help locate the options you need.

Yeah, what's causing it is Display Power Saving Technology setting in the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel. The problem is, however, that unplugging the laptop causes the option to Enable itself automatically! Which in turn causes the display to start adjusting brightness again...

Somewhere it mentioned that you have to disable it both on battery and when plugged in. If you've done that, and also made sure the graphics driver is updated to the latest, then the only thing you can do would be to contact intel (or possibly Acer) to try to get them to issue a fix. I've not come across any fix for this problem other than what is described in those responses I posted before :(

You might continue your search in such forums (intel, dell, acer, etc) and see if you can't find anything. Sorry I couldn't be more help

ok, here is the fix..

download the driver package, extract it if needed, but do not let it install..

Go to programs and features and remove the intel video driver package

you will have to reboot to verify the driver package and intel control panel was removed..

upon startup windows will find a video driver and install it..

go to device manager, find the video adapter, update driver, point to then downloaded and extracted driver folder..

the issue is not the driver itself, it is the intel control panel App

usually just removing the driver package is enough to remove the Apps that go with it, and a lot of times the actual driver is not really removed.. but if it is you can tell windows where to find the driver

Tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling; both the one provided by Acer for my device, and the generic one for my Graphics Card from the Intel website.

Both times, the Intel Control Panel returns, the Display Power Saving setting returns, and both times the setting gets re-Enabled everytime I unplug the laptop.

how are you installing the driver? by running the setup.exe file? or through device manager?

For the Acer one, via the Device Manager --> Update Driver --> Browse option.
For the Intel one, I just launched the .exe file.

It's a laptop, so it's not actually turning off.

Ok, fine, yours does not dim. I'm saying that mine does. Which is something that I don't want. Which is the issue here.

That's my Power Options for the High Performance profile (which is the only one I use).

This is how I want my Intel Control Panel to look:

This is what it keeps reverting to everytime I unplug the laptop:

When I Disable it, I can literally see the brightness increase once more.
