Solved Nvidia GT 740 / AMD(ATI)?

long story short i'm, looking to replace a nvidia 8800(yes i said 8800) with a evga nvidia gt 740(link below), or an equivalent amd(ati) card. i'd like suggestions on amd(ati) cards that are comparable to the gt 740 linked below. thanks

AMD R7 260 or 260x would be roughly an alternative.

I have it so it's from experience. Had 750 for couple of days but exchanged it for R7. My is from MSI.

oh cool i just added a msi one to my speed dial group "possible purchases" at newegg for 100, which is what the 740 is running without rebates. hood to know someone is running it. thanks again.

AMD drivers 14.12 "Omega" drivers work perfectly an MSI Afterburner can OC GPU pretty good while MSI "Combustor" can check all the parameters and performance.
Omega drivers also come with utility to help set video card to work best it can with some games and have presets for them.

well i'm not a gamer. i just need to replace a failing 8800 and wanted something that's just about 4 times the card the 8800 is without breaking the bank. i checked the r7 250x as well and i think that's the card, but you steering me in the right direction was and is very much appreciated, so thanks again.

I've been in similar boat not too long ago. There are few more points for having newer and more powerful GPU. One is connectors for better monitors and TVs. Another one is that older ones were locked to 300 MHz for 2D but newer ones like that R7 can go well over 400 MHz in 2D depending on load and needs. So, you don't need to be a gamer to make use of it. There are also filters that can be applied to video to make it better, cut down on hiccups and smooth the edges on fonts, video and pictures.
