Solved Will DirectX 12 require a new GPU?

Since Microsoft has announced its new API, DirectX 12, I was wondering if my NVIDIA GeForce GT 840m card in my laptop would support it, since the spec sheet on NVIDIA's site states this card supports DX11.2. In other words, will NVIDIA release some kind of update that will allow this card to support DX12, or is a graphic card stuck on the latest DX version that was available at the card's release?

The reason this is worrying me is because most of this year's later games are rumored to require DX12.

One last thing, please don't reply "oh well your gpu is crap its only gt not gtx why would you even try to play games on it you fag". If that's what you think, then you're wrong because I can run COD:AW and other newer titles at 60fps on my laptop's native resolution (1366x768) with textures on high and anti-aliasing off, if not set to FXAA, which runs fine most of the time but can drop my FPS in some cases. And the "X" in GTX only means that your GPU is capable of 1080p gaming. GT GPUs can run games fine, just not in 1080p. Anyway, I'm getting off track, just please answer the question instead of piddling and moaning about my GPU's capabilities.

Yeah, we'll probably all need new gpu's to use it. They're also, changing the coding in Windows 10 from the 6*** numbering that was used in Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 in Windows 10 to 10,***. I'm curious to see if that last one effects what software will work with Windows 10. The current Windows 10 Technical Preview is using the old 6*** kernel. Supposedly the Windows 10 Consumer Preview (which should be discussed later today) is supposedly using the 10,*** kernel coding.

We'll need new GPUs just to take advantage of DX12, but our current cards will run DX9/10/11/11.x games normally under Windows 10. I have a Radeon R9 280X IceQ X2 (DX 11.1 capable), and I don't intend to replace it until the end of this year...

So does that mean our GPUs and all existing games and software are f*cked?

No. It means that new DX12 games will require new GPUs.

Yep, new gpu's will be needed to use DX12. Otherwise you'll be using DX 11 or whatever your gpu supports.

Your "Wrong!!!" statement is a bit too harsh... especially when you consider that traditionally DX coding was hardwired into the GPU's since DX10, by both AMD and NVidia - meaning in order to get the latest DX features you had to purchase a new GPU since the DX API couldn't be "upgraded" at the software level... i.e. driver update. Now, all of a sudden the current crop of AMD (and I suspect NVidia) cards are capable of updates through either a firmware or software update? Hmmm...

And BTW... if they do allow DX12 on the current crop of cards through either firmware of driver update, it'll be somewhat an admission that they were gouging us the previous times in requiring us to "purchase" new cards for DX upgrades.

Oh, and I'll believe it when I actually see it, despite the statement from AMD - especially when new cards may be hitting the market sometime this year anyway.

Just going by what was posted. Everyone said you needed new GPU's and that was "Wrong"

I just posted what NVIDIA and AMD stated in March of last year. They know more about their products then I do.

folks directx has always include all previous versions of the software, so no one will have any problems running their games nor have to upgrade their video cards.

READ WHAT I WROTE! i answered the op's question. to help you understand this FACT i put the part that you seemed to missed or overlooked in bold.

New Graphics Cards won't be essential for DirectX 12

"Following last week’s press event, Xbox executive, Mike Ybarra, said that “There will be DX 11.1 cards that take advantage of a lot of the driver and software tech that we’re bringing in Windows 10, but if you want the full benefits of DX12, you’re going to need a DX12 card.”"

I'm fairly sure that if you want to run a DX12 game with full DX12 benefits, then you'll need a GPU that supports DX12, so most likely an upgrade from what most people have now. You'll likely still be able to play DX12 games in DX11 mode on current hardware, the same way you can play some new games in DX10 mode still.
