Hello...I had the issue of not getting rid of "Microsoft basic display adapter"...could not find a driver which Windows 8 would support ...so I gave up and spent $40. on a new video card....now I have adjustable screen resolution and most importantly now I can mirror my computer to my large TV via HDMI cable...which was what I wanted in the first place!...and now...I have a "SLEEP" option which I did not have before installing this video card...I made no other changes....so I'd like to know why?...but I'm very pleased now...the Comp goes into sleep mode and does'nt waste electricity...GREAT!..check all power options available ...thanks just thought this might help someone.*john

so I'd like to know why?

Because ... the basic video drivers likely do not support sleep -- but the new video drivers installed for the new card, do.

It's often the video drivers (or lack thereof) that block sleep/hibernation from working.
