Dual Monitor problems

Hi all, new to the forum. Running Windows 8.1, I just connected a second monitor. I can see both screens side by side and each do exactly the same thing. I tried to extend ( Windows Key + P ) but nothing happens. In fact nothing happens when you press any of the choices - second screen only, PC only etc ... When I go to screen resolution, I see that only one monitor is detected and when I try to identify and detect - again, nothing happens. What needs to happened here ? Could it be a driver issue ? Or maybe the splitter that I'm using ? I'm not so computer savvy so I am unsure what to do and all my research to try to resolve the issue thus far has not really helped. Thanks in advance !

You cannot do it that way. The same input split to 2 monitors will give you the same on each monitor.

You need two separate leads, one to each Monitor from two different Video Outputs from your PC/Graphics Card.
