New Monitor - Not the right display resolution!

Hello! Just today I started using a brand new monitor for my HP laptop. It's pretty old, I'd had it for quite a while now. It's a SyncMaster 2043 SNX, and I have managed to get it to fill the screen with a bad 1280x720 resolution. My Native monitor resolution is 1600x900 on my laptop; is there any way to make it fill the external monitor with it's Native resolution?

Thanks!

What options do you have in your screen resolution:

That monitor should support 1600x900, when you unplug the monitor does your laptop screen resolution support 1600x900, it should but i'm just wondering if you can actually select that resolution?

Are your graphics drivers up-to-date?

Where would I find my drivers? I tried Device Manager>Moniters but it just shows "Generic pHp Moniter" Which is up-to-date. For my video card drivers, due to my excessive amount of games, are all updated.

I don't often install drivers for monitors as they tend to "just work" but if you search for windows updates, under optional are any listed for your monitor?

1. What were the updates?

2. Does it detect the monitor if you look at the screen resolution settings

Nevermind, restarted computer and that's fixed. Back to the subject, even with the new drivers and updates installed, it does not show the 1600x900 settings still

If you haven't already... try setting the external monitor to 'Extend these displays' >> apply the settings and see if the resolution options change?

I'm stumped on this sorry... maybe someone else can offer a little more help so stick around but i can only assume that the monitor isnt compatible with windows 8, looking at the support site it only lists up to vista under the downloads tab and that driver is dated 2008 - Support - LCD 2043SWX-1 | Samsung Monitors

Do you have a different monitor you could try?

It's fine. All I really need is how to set the resolution to 1600x900, since it is not in the options. If there was some kind of manual way to do it...

What about monitor frequency ? Often if set to more than 60 it will not let you set higher resolution.

Wow, really? Thanks, that will help! :D But the only way it can display a really good screen is if it is on 1280x720 without the screen stretched and instead on auto-fit.

BTW My internet's down for some sites so I cannot upload my image to show to imgur. I will as soon as possible
