Screen artifacts when connecting with HDMI from VAIO

My wife has a nice new VAIO laptop. We connect it to a Samsung TV with an HDMI cable.
Initially there were video artifacts on the TV screen, but after some fiddling they seemed to go away.
Today they have returned. I have tried another HDMI cable and it didn't help.

The artifacts are only on the TV screen and not on the laptop display.
They cannot be captured with a screenshot (I just tried this and am posting from my computer).

The web search picture (HDMI.jpg) shows small vertical lines in a row after some of the text.
    Sort of like this: | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
but less than the height of these lines.
There is also a set of the lines that follows the mouse cursor around.

The VAIO desktop picture (HDMI2.jpg) shows "sparkles" around the VAIO name and spreading to the left where it takes up the entire side of the screen.

    Any ideas/suggestions?

Used the TV and cable from my system on the wife's system and it appears to work fine (no complaints from the wife! :0).
Using the TV and cable from the wife's system on my system and there are some video artifacts.

Going to experiment with another cable (again) and with the different HDMI inputs on the TV
Also going to try another TV on the wife's system (she likes the older TV better).
