Hello there,
I just installed Windows 8.1 x86 on my old notebook Dell Inspiron 6400 and there is a problem in regards to universal search. I suppose that is the graphics card matters because sometimes when I try to wright something I can't see any letters that I type and other times it show some artefacts.
I presume that the driver it's installed correctly because anything else it works perfectly.
I have install the driver about couple of times now and nothing good happens.
Please help me to understand what is happening.
I'm sorry about my bad English.

This print screen maybe will be helpful.

That's an really old video card, which drivers did you use ? should be a driver with "Legacy" in it's name.

Yes you are right it is an old card, but it works just fine on Windows 7 without any crap things like now in Win 8.1.
And the drivers is delivered by Dell only for Windows Vista and I have installed with compatibility check for Windows Vista....
I installed Windows 8.1 because Microsoft has reported that this graphics card is OK?!

Windows compatibility checks only for their, MS drivers and they are not great anyway, just enough for GPU to work. Check with AMD for proper drivers, computer manufacturers are not renown for driver updates.

Install this driver via Device manager Microsoft Update Catalog. It is the latest provided for your card - 8.593.100. I am using it on Mobility Radeon X2300 on Windows 8 without any problems. Good luck!

The AMD site, never provide drivers for their graphics card which are implemented on DELL systems. Always send me/us to Dell manufacturer for an appropriated driver. I NEVER understand, WHY.

Anyway, thank you very much for support.

What is your current driver version? What do you mean by "this driver didn't work for me"? Did you try to install it through Device manager/ Update driver/Browse my computer for driver software and navigate to the folder you have saved the file.

Sorry to hear that. Can you post your video hardware ids? You can also try these drivers for Windows 7 and Windows Vista Microsoft Update Catalog

Believe me, I try. In the end, maybe its not so bad after all even if it's a pretty good feature, and this is not the end of the World... :)

You are lucky that succeeded in installing Windows 8.1. I have tried on my PC with Mobility Radeon X2300 but to no avail even if Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant tells that everything is compatible. Good luck in the future and I hope you solve your problems!:)

Edit: I had such problems but with programs not Windows specifically and I managed to solve it by changing the second setting. Change system locale to your current location. If this does not help I don't have any other ideas. Sorry! Capture.PNG
