Solved Microsoft Basic Display Adapter

Just threw the consumer preview of windows 8 on an old desktop that was previously running 7, and now I can't get it to recognize my graphics card. It's just an integrated AMD chip, the Radeon X200. I found a copy of the legacy drivers for vista online and ran the installer in compatibility mode, but it won't install the drivers because windows will not pick up the card at all and this microsoft basic display adapter is all that shows up in device manager for display adapters. If need be I have a radeon x1650 pro PCIe card I can install, but would prefer to just get the integrated X200 chip working properly if possible. Right now the resolution is awful and anything that requires even the slightest bit of hardware acceleration runs like a dog. How can I fix this problem?

Also this is a full install, not a virtual machine. Just ran the upgrade from 7 ultimate, didn't wipe and do a clean install.

Find the correct CCC for your chip, download it, and let it put the files in the default folder but DON'T install CCC. Go to Device Manager, Display Adapters and you should see the default Microsoft Display Adapter, click update, direct the updater to the folder your driver is in and it will install your driver for you.

Worked perfectly! Now I can actually use this with a normal resolution, thanks!!

No problem bro, had the same issue myself for a while with my X1200.

What does CCC mean? Are you talking about the Chipset drivers?

It stands for Catalyst Control Center, see the Wikipedia page for more info: AMD Catalyst - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hi,

have a similar problem. with a dell inspiron 9400 after installing windows 8 I cannot select an external monitor. instead of the ATI driver I have MS basic display adapter and I only see one screen. I tried the workaround above: I go to update the device driver but I get this message: the best driver software for device is already installed. windows has determined that the driver software for your device is up to date. Microsoft basic display adapter.
the CCC is under directory R128572. I have also tried to run it but get an error.
tx in advance for any idea. New Picture jpeg.jpg

Well, the FIRST thing you need to find out is what video chipset your Dell uses. I did a quick Google and that model came out in at least two forms: one using the Intel 945GM chipset, and another using the Nvidea 7900GS. The drivers are not interchangeable.

Once you find that out, you should do a quick Google on using that Chipset with Windows 8.

The GOOD news is that the Intel chipset was new enough to run Win7 with Aero support, so it's likely that it will have Win8 drivers as well; the BAD news is that the Nvidia chipset probably does not have Win8 drivers.

Also, back with Win7, you could run XP-era video drivers; with Win8, you can not as MS removed the XPDM compatibility.

I had this problem as well. This is how is solved it: I was using a HP Pavillion notebook with AMD Radeon GPU.
PROBS:

  • dxdiag showed display was working OK with all direct X Features enabled, BUT graphics adpter name was Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and only showed 256 MB graphics memory instead of the 2GB in my Radeon Graphics adapter.
  • Device Manager showed display adapter 'working properly', but instead of 'AMD Radeon' as my adapter showed Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
  • GPU-Z AND CPU-Z were all showing Microsoft Basic Display Adapter as my display adaptor.
  • The graphics drivers from HP.com dint work and graphics card was still not detected.
SOLUTION:

  1. I checked my notebook Specs from HP.com website and found that my notebook had AMD Radeon HD 8650M/8670M Dual GPU (1 GB DDR3 dedicated). This was the only way since device manager, dxdiag, system info, CPU-Z and GPU-Z were all showing Microsoft Basic Display Adapter as my adapter name!!
  2. I went to the amd site: Download Drivers , System: Notebook, Family: Radeon HD Series, Product: Radeon HD 8xxxM Series, OS: Windows 8
  3. Download Driver
  4. Install and finally worked.

I have a Tek Panel 370 37" All in One Touchscreen Computer with and AMD Dual Core 64 Bit processor. I installed Window 8 and then upgraded to 8.1.

My issue is that I cannot get a driver for the ATI Radeon X1200 integrated video card to function. I go through all of the suggested procedures and I end up with the following message: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43).

Please advise.

An off brand with no support/driver option on their home page is troubling. :(
