Upgraded to 8.1, graphics and gaming WEI score dropped out

Well I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 and ran the WEI test from an elevated C prompt, and it seems to have taken a dive in the graphics and gaming areas as opposed to the WEI I ran last fall with Windows 8 installed. I have no clue as to why or what to do about it. The machine runs well. I did an SFC/ Scannow to check for errors and it was good.
Semi-new HP DV7 Notebook. Display adapters : Intel HD Graphics 4000......NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M
Below are the 2 tests from 10-2013 and 3-2014

Hey mate,

I wouldn't bank on those scores at all. They mean next to nothing.

However, keep in mind that 8.1 is NOT an update from 8. It is a completely new OS upgrade. So you will want to make sure you have installed all drivers over again, including BIOS, for the new 8.1 OS. It should be listed as separate from windows 8 in the driver list when you go to download them. This may even help the scores.

Ensure you have all important windows updates, and all programs (especially antivirus) have been updated. Not much I can suggest besides what I have. Curious about optimizing windows without tuneup programs (which are not recommended for windows 8-8.1)? See this: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/37511-optimize-performance-windows-8-a.html

Mine took a dump too after update to 8.1, also getting the 4.9 gaming performance score. Was much higher before, forget exactly what it was though. I never put a lot of stock in WEI anyway. The other commercial benchmark utilities are a better indicator of gaming performance.

^Good to know.

Come to think of it, there are plenty of 3rd party antivirus programs that can slow down a computer. There are fast ones though. Some claim to be faster than even windows Defender (concerning impact on computer performance). Either stick with Defender, or choose one that is fast. And never use 2 AV programs at once.

I had a windows 7 computer with MSE on it slow to a crawl after installing another AV, and it wasn't the new AV's fault. MSE had some files left over that were not completely removed, so they conflicted with the new one. After running a MS 'fix-it' for removal, the computer went back to its former self. So always use some remover with AV programs, not just windows built-in uninstaller.

And once again, tune-ups and optimizers more often than not will harm your computer instead of help. They are use at your own risk :)

That is interesting Popeye. Huh. There must be some reason why they do not want to make it easy for us to get the WEI scores in 8.1 and maybe we found it.
Dust Sailor, I went to the HP site and it claims all my drivers are the latest for my system, it knows what I have. I did go to the NVIDIA site and downloaded the newest GeForce 650M driver that HP didn't use yet and it didn't make any difference. No big deal I guess.
I have not changed a thing as far as my AV or anything else except for upgrading to 8.1. I do have a Samsung 840 pro x 256 and this mother hubbard is fast !

Thanks

No problem. Hopefully the computer isn't acting any slower. I posted a lot on 'optimizing' your computer, but not so much on solving the problem. As popeye said, sounds like it has something to do with Win8.1 rather than anything else. Take care!

8.1 is a new o.s. and also there is newer hardware available since Windows 8 came out. Also Microsoft killed WEI in 8.1, so you can't go by it. As other's already stated run some real benchmarks to get a idea of what your pc is capable of.

I'm confused. There are different benchmarks for different hardware. That is a disk benchmark, there are graphics benchmark utilities. What exactly are you trying to measure? Disk performance, graphics performance or overall performance?

Would also be nice if you filled out your system specs a bit more.

That's the only benchmark I have and it didn't change much with Windows 8.1. As far as the graphics go, I really dont know what to do about the low WEI ...Looks like I wont be able to do anything about it. I am thinking it is not the fault of the computer but rather something to do with 8.1 .
I have an i7 3740QM and 64 bit Windows.

Nice score on that Sammy, but it's only disk benchmark. There are many benchmarking programs with which you can compare the scores with others with similar systems. You can start with this free benchmark for CPU, GPU and overall scores. MAXON | 3D FOR THE REAL WORLD: Overview

I am somewhat of a novice at these things but am willing to learn..I downloaded the Maxon and ran the 2 tests I could find..One was Open GL and I had a 55.77fps and the CPU was 627 cb. I don't know if these are good or bad for a notebook.
Thanks CountMike.

They dropped it because it was pointless. Maybe I have 4.4 or 5.9 or 7.8. What does it mean?

It means nothing. Microsoft decided it was pointless and dropped it. I suggest you do also.

Didn't exactly drop it, just hid it from users. It's still used internally during installation to determine automatic settings for GUI.

Now the Graphics Memory Sizing is being done by Win 8/8.1 and not by Intel drivers.

Hi dodgeman21,

For the record, my WEI graphic scores also dropped a bit when I went to 8.1. Everyone participating in this thread has offered some good advice (in one form or another) so, if all is well otherwise, I'd just ignore the difference (like I'm doing).

Cheers friend,
