ASUS HD7790 causes freezes

Hello everyone,

after upgrading from Win7 (x64) to Win8.1 Professional N (x64) my system started to freeze randomly.
It seems to be a driver related issue, since the freezes do not occur, when I disable the video card in the device manager.
I recently upgraded to the new beta driver (v14.1) which made it even worse.

I contacted the ASUS-support already. They said the card is broken - which does sound strange to me, since it worked fine using WIN7.

Any ideas if there is anything else that can lead to the freeze or how to solve this?

Hardware specs are:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4570
MB: ASRock Fatal1ty H87 Performance
Video: Asus HD7790-DC2OC-2GD5
Memory: 2x 4GB DDR3-1600 Kingston ValueRAM
PSU: Enermax Liberty - 500W (ELT500AWT)

SF-Logs

Hi, I uninstalled the driver using Driver Fusion and the unwised it (or its remainders) via Control Centre.

I created two SF-logs for you;
One with the formerly installed (but disabled) beta driver,
And a new one with the now installed driver version 13-12 (which is so far enabled and did not freeze within the last 7 mins at least...).
But I did not get a dump (I assume, this is because I never had a BSOD?).

Thanks for your help!

PS. Graphics Card definitely is awesome - at least it used to be using Win7 ; )

I noticed this: Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\5&297258BB&0&9 43 (<<<that's code 43 - maybe .inf update below will help it)

This has some info on it: What to Try When Your USB Device is an "Unknown Device" - Microsoft Windows USB Core Team Blog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

You don't have Intel's driver installed for storage, so download it from motherboard site or Intel.com and install:

Code:

Manufacturer Intel

Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\storahci.sys (6.3.9600.16384, 105.34 KB (107,872 bytes), 22/08/2013 13:40)

You don't have the Realtek HD Audio codec driver installed:

Code:
Name High Definition Audio Device
Manufacturer Microsoft
Status OK
PNP Device ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0900&SUBSYS_18491151&REV_1000\4&1902E5E1&0&0001
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\hdaudio.sys (6.3.9600.16384, 386.50 KB (395,776 bytes), 22/08/2013 13:38)

Install it from here:

Realtek

Install this to update chipset .inf: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...ProdId=816&DwnldID=20775&keyword=inf&lang=eng

When done, perform a nice defrag on the HDD.

You can also disable the Windows Search service since that can cause issues like this.

If you still have issues after, please attach a screenshot of CPU-Z Memory tab, and one screenshot for each stick of RAM of the SPD tab.

Unfortunately the system still freezes. Recently it did when simply working in an LibreOffice Spreadsheet..

I tried turning off the search but I'm afraid the new search cant be disabled under Win8.1, the screenshots are attached as requested - hope it helps and thanks again for your help!

No, I didn't. I installed the latest AMD driver, but the ASUS driver seems to be different (at least it has a different size), so I will give it a shot and see if it helps.. I'll let you know, if it changed anything.

Latest from AMD non-beta is great, just like all besides latest beta. I play hours and hours every day, old to newest games with this:

Has been perfect for me, literally.

Mhh... Seems as if this was the solution. I installed the ASUS driver and the PC is running stable for more than two hours now *touch wood*. I'll do a clean install tomorrow with the new driver and will stress the PC a bit over the day - keep your fingers crossed everyone ; )

If it doesn't freeze again, I'll mark the thread as solved.

Hello,
I am not trying to hijack this thread but I have a very similar situation and I though sharing it might help us both.
I have the ASUS HD7790-DC2OC-1GD5 and even the same CPU. Only in my case this is a very new build and the problems started about a week after I finished it and installed Win 8.1. I wouldn't get BSOD or crash dumps either until I enabled driver verifier. The cause seems to be a deadlock in the graphic driver.
See this post for a better explanation(thats the thread with my problem):
New PC suddenly freezes with no warning - Windows+8 - Windows 8

I have tried different drivers now, including the ones from ASUS website but nothing worked so far.
Please let me know if you find a solution!

Nah dude. No way.

You can see the BSOD subforum here if you would like help with that so we can fix it all up for ya.

But, welcome. :)

On a side note - I've read what you said about clocks. I pin mine at 1200 MHz when I game. The card is a freakin' beast when considering its price point.

Look at Pixel and Texture fill rates. That's boss for the price I paid. heh

......... -.- ........... That bl.... PC froze again -.-
I really dont get it. The PC works fine for a while, no matter what I do. For instance I'm workin' in Photoshop, copy things and listen to music via Spotify - at the same time, no problem. And then in another moment - just spotify open, not mean any harm and booom - it crashes. This is becoming a pain in the neck by now.
Do you guys happen to have another idea where the problem could come from?

TIA xDegree

No way its the same problem?
I dont know, believe me I have tried a lot already. I am not saying it is the same, but so far looks identical to mine and I am only saying it could be.
Also, not sure what you mean about the clocks... I never touched them.

Try enabling manual memory dump as explained here:
Support | How to get a Windows memory dump
Enable driver verifier:
Driver Verifier - BSOD related - Windows 8.1, 8, 7 & Vista - Sysnative Forums

These will not solve the problem but they might IDENTIFY it. Meaning you might get some error or some other information from the dumps instead of just the computer freezing and not knowing what causing it. This might also confirm whether its similar to my situation or not.
