AMD Compatibility with Windows 8.1

My Sapphire AMD HD 7870 just bit the dust so it has been sent back with an RMA. I had hoped to replace it with an ASUS AMD HD 3850 but Windows 8.1 will not work with it. There is an error message on a blue screen something about a header (sorry I don't have the exact error message today).

I suspected it was a driver problem so uninstalled the existing driver and tried to install the latest AMD one. I can uninstall OK but as soon as I reboot the Microsoft driver installs itself giving me no opportunity to install the AMD one.

Any suggestions as to how to fix this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Don

As an owner of AMD HD3850 Top, I had same problem. I solved it by installing this driver and works perfectly on 8.1.
amd_catalyst_13.4_legacy_beta_vista_win7_win8.exe
just google it and download.

Mike,

When I had the first problem about a week ago I tried the latest drivers, including the beta ones, without success. Windows 8.1 is not letting me install the AMD driver.

"Legacy" in the driver's version is the keyword here, AMD considers all before I think 5xxx a legacy product and so marks drivers accordingly. Before that, v12.6 legacy driver was working perfectly (CCC too ) on Win8 but not on 8.1.

Thanks for staying with me Mike.

After your last message I went to the AMD site and got the Legacy driver. However when I tried to install it I got a message saying "Failed to load detection driver". I read that this may be caused by remnants of the old driver so I used Driver Sweeper to clean up the old stuff. This did not solve the problem as I still got the detection error.

Any help will be appreciated.

Don

Don:

When I tried to install AMD drivers under Win8 for my AMD 4290, I used their installer and, while it appeared to go OK, after a reboot, the AMD driver was not installed; instead, the generic MS driver was still in place.

What I found worked was using the Device Manager to install the driver by pointing it to the folder containing the .INF file on the "C: drive under C:\AMD\Support\13-1-legacy_vista_win7_win8_32_dd_ccc\Packages\Drivers\Display\W8_INF\

I also tried this later for the 13.4 drivers -- and it did NOT work.
