I have hp pavlion laptop with windows 8. It has intel hd 4600 and ati radeon 8670m. The problem is when ever i play any game it runs on intel instead of ati. For example in gta 4 benchmark it shows that its running on intel 4600 and also when i play splinter cell blacklist..it lags alot.

Welcome tho the forums.

Sometimes this issue comes up because the game is not detected by the graphics (not added on a profile list). Try to install the AMD application profiles, it will add some support even without Catalyst setup:
AMD Catalyst

Make sure the graphic drivers are up to date and the profiles installed. In case it all fails, try running with the selected card manually:
Right click on the game's exe/shortcut and choose: "Run with graphics processor" then select the radeon.

The option is added by the Radeon driver itself (context menu option), containing the Catalyst Control Center (CCC: check the options there, see if some context menu options can be enabled) so you should install the latest driver from their site, to be safe, new driver/install may fix the right click menu (reboot as well after the install).

Example for Nvidia, should be similar for AMD:
graphics.jpg

Since I don't know if you're on 64 or 32bit OS, here are the pages for the graphic drivers:
AMD Graphics Drivers & Software

Select all the right options for your graphics, get the driver and install it.

The Intel one is also recommended to be updated, you or the automatic updaters have to do it. :)

That's all.

Good luck

It seems you are on 64bit OS.

Make sure you check the HP drivers page for your model:
Software & driver downloads HP Pavilion 15-e033tx Notebook PC | HP® Support

It contains recommended drivers, see these all and of course the graphic ones (in case the ones from AMD and Intel fail, it's just a backup because some models don't like other drivers than from manufacturer and some people have difficulties installing some drivers).

All needed installers should work just fine.

Yes it is, many have reported that.

The laptop must have other default options.
Check the graphic settings, somewhere the option exists.

Unfortunately that's just an example since I don't have any AMD cards (most likely my next hardware).

Look at all the options there that say switchable graphics.

Do you have any graphics options if you right click on the desktop? What do you see?
If you right click a program shortcut, is there no option?

Regarding the screenshots:
Once again, try to see the "switch" options.

8670m, good card:
I'm not sure. Depends on graphic memory amount, speed, gpu...

For a laptop it looks like a pretty good one. If you look more carefully I think it has 1Gb DDR3, not the fastest, for that mem type you might also find some 2GB cards.
AMD Radeon HD 8670M - NotebookCheck.net Tech

I also have laptop here but I won't rely much on it for gaming, I play pretty old releases anyway.

Once you can use the radeon, see for yourself how good it is but for heavier gaming you would better go with a desktop, for light gaming it will do. Some laptops tend to get hot pretty fast so monitor the temp's and do some benchmarking.

Overall your pavilion has pretty advanced hardware for a 15inch laptop (chipset is newer than mine: intel 4000 -> 4600) but they didn't upgraded it to the max which is typically.
For example mine is also HP 15inch but I had to insert an SSD and add 16GB ram to it myself, then it's a bit better.

These kind of models were built with the main goal to be most performant at the lowest power usage, mobile: the battery life is longer. The gaming experience is not that high but decent, just don't play with the battery inserted; removing the battery when the machine is used on a desktop helps also reduce heat near the fans. :)

Cheers!

2GB it's good.

Normally some of the graphics menus we talked about should contain all the needed options.
Look also in Intel Graphics options.

When you update drivers, try to uninstall the current ones completely (remove driver's software from Device Manager) and then install the latest with the installer, reboot even if it doesn't ask it.

i have done this thing thrice but nothing happens! how can i switch my graphics from intel to ati!!!!!!!

This issue of yours got pretty serious and it seems not even HP forum managed to get an answer yet...

Here are some steps that I have in mind for you, follow or not, in case you were missing something.
Some steps may be considered scary or too advanced to some users but sometimes it's the way it has to be done.

I my opinion older drivers got replaced by newer ones but the older settings and profiles remained. For instance if the manufacturer or someone decided to remove some options like the switchable graphics options (I can do that for Nvidia) then it will remain that way until the user cleans / resets settings to default. The driver installer should allow to reset settings to default but I'm not sure it applies to both Intel and AMD.

Try cleaning the profiles and settings yourself (see below). I hope they didn't include registry settings for graphic drivers: this usually doesn't happen and those get removed when uninstalling, left-overs are quite harmless.

I hope you know what removing a driver entirely means: it means that when you refresh the driver's list or reboot the machine, the driver in question gets removed from the list and replaced by a generic one called something like "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". Driver gets removed from system32's driverstore.

What happens if you remove the Intel graphic driver entirely?
I'm not sure; in my case it doesn't switch to Nvidia because Nvidia is "sleeping" just what your Radeon does... Intel is the main one but Nvidia or ATI should decide when to kick in: detecting 3D acceleration applications.

I hope you are not using Power Saver mode from the power options...
Balanced will do, as well as High Performance.

Removing all driver related stuff will ensure a clean profile with default setting, start over fresh.
The AMD one (people still call it ATI) has to be removed as well BUT with all previous settings in order to start with a fresh profile.

-remove the driver entirely (I've already said enough about this)
-remove the driver's software (Device Manager or Programs and Features)
-all AMD / ATI Radeon folders need to be removed in Program Files and Program Files (x86)
-check in "%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming" folder for any AMD graphics / Radeon related settings and remove the found folders or files.
-delete any remaining folders in C-drive that the older graphics installer may have created. (you locate them by name: drivers, ATI / AMD... the system drive shouldn't contain too much visible root folders... look carefully and don't delete anything if you're not sure.
Pay attention at the structure...

contents.png
In this example drivers were extracted in the drivers folder, ATI and Nvidia can create their own, Intel stores some logs in their folder, mostly no drivers at all. Don't mess with the rest of the folders: with the exception that In both Program Files you can look for left-overs of graphics drivers and in the Users folder your user map will be the one mentioned previously in %userprofile% for specific extra settings.

This is a list of possibilities, some steps won't apply to you because there won't be any wanted files/folders there.

In the end you will be clean, using 2 MS Basic Display adapters* and it's time to install the graphic ones from the latest installers. Begin with Intel because it's the main one.

*It might be possible that you won't get back to MS basic display drivers because the system's driverstore may contain already Intel or ATI drivers, it's fine: continue from there, you've already cleaned up the settings folders and reset-ed all graphic settings; proceed with installing new drivers.

If you have zipped drivers extract them and install through Device Manager: it will install everything from drivers to their needed software, update services and context menu entries.

Intel working together with AMD, each with it's own graphic cards... hopefully it works well. :)

Good luck.

You can go here: leshcatlabs.net

He's been modding drivers for quite some time for Intel+AMD switchable laptops. I used them myself successfully until my old laptop broke and my new one now has a NVidia graphics card.

There is allot of information and drivers there. You'll have to just slog through it and read the manuals he's written for cleaning old drivers and installing his modded ones. Good luck!
