Issues with W8.1 Nvidia drivers from Windows Update

Windows 8.1 RTM added 10GB of Nvidia files to DriverStore.

My Windows 8.1 Pro x64 RTM clean install used about 16 to 17 GB of disk space. After installing Nvidia GeForce 326.01 drivers via Windows Update, the disk usage went up 10 GB!

Checking the contents of C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository folder found 37 nv* folders (totaling 10GB) containing Nvidia drivers, all with a creation date similar to date & time of Nvidia GeForce 326.01 driver installation through Windows Update. Probably explains why the Windows Update progress bar lingered at 0% for several minutes when the Nvidia drivers were being installed.

This didn't happen on the same computer with Nvidia GeForce drivers installation via Windows Update on Windows 8 Pro x64 RTM.

I noticed a similar inquiry posted on the Microsoft Community forums but no significant replies.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm inclined to just delete the folders.
    Tom

Instead of remove these folders. Just uninstall the update:
    1. Invoke Windows updates from Control Panel
    2. Click on Update History->Installed Updates then uninstall it (whatever the KB# is for Nvidia GForce)
    3. Go to nvidia.com and download the driver
    4. Use custom install from nvidia installer. On the next screen, select "Clean Install"

    1. Invoke Windows updates from Control Panel
    2. Click on Update History->Installed Updates then uninstall it (whatever the KB# is for Nvidia GForce)
    3. Go back to C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository folder and can safely delete the folders if they are still there.
    4. Go to nvidia.com and download the driver
    5. Use custom install from nvidia installer. On the next screen, select "Clean Install" from the bottom left corner

    Windows 8.1 Pro + MC 64 Bit

Windows 8.1 Pro + MC here. I see NVIDIA Graphics Driver 326.01 in my Programs and features list. 3D Vision and NVidia update are listed too. I only have the one nv_dispi.inf_amd64_210447f1c6d449bc listed in my FileRepository folder. That folder is only 637 MB and my Windows install is only ~17 GB. To coin a phrase I saw in another thread it looks like "Something Happened" during your driver install. I would think you'll have to do something along the lines of what topgundcp posted to clean it up.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I can clean it up easy enough.

As an experiment, I've fresh-installed several times. I can replicate two scenarios. From a fresh install in each scenario here's what I get:

    • If I install the Nvidia drivers from Windows Update I can literally watch as the 37+/- folders (10GB) appear in FileRepository (and the WU progress bar doesn't move). In this scenario, if I uninstall the Nvidia drivers from Device Manager, it deletes only one of the subfolders in FileRepository. If I uninstall the Nvidia drivers from Programs & Features, it removes all 10GB of the FileRepository Nvidia-related subfolders.

    • If I turn off Windows Update and update the Nvidia drivers from Device Manager, it installs just a couple folders in FileRepository (and Programs & Features lists Nvidia 3D Vision Driver 327.02, Nvidia Grapics Driver 327.02 and Nvidia Update 1.14.17).

Windows Update seems to install v326.01 where Device Manager installs v327.02.

I haven't gotten around to trying W8.1 on another Nvidia laptop nor my Nvidia desktop so I don't know how they will behave.

I was wondering if anyone has had this happen, or knew this to be a bug that MS might be aware of, etc., etc.

326.01 are the Windows 8 preview drivers. At least that's what I found when I Googled them, 326.01-desktop-win8-preview-64bit-international-whql. They must be what NVidia have submitted to Microsoft for Windows update. 326.80-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-english-beta is what I get listed for my GT 640 for Windows 8.1 on the NVidia driver download site. They are dated August 20, 2013.

How do you get to v327.02 in Device Manager? All I get is your driver is up to date. I haven't seen 327.02 on the NVidia site either.

No, I've never seen 327.02 on the Nvidia site either, but Device Manager reports:
    Driver Version: 9.18.13.2702
(on Nvidia drivers, moving the last decimal two places to the right and using only the last 5 digits gives the Nvidia version number)
    9.18.13.2702 becomes 327.02

It must have something to do with what video card your running. If I try to update from device manager I get "The best driver software for your device is already installed". For me that's 9.18.13.2601.
