monitor and HDMI

Hi, I connected my Fujitsu laptop to the "dining room" Tv (Its a cheap technika from Tesco 22") via HDMI cable, with immediate results.

I then tried to connect the laptop to my new monitor Asus VE228HR 21.5". This is my main monitor connected to my desktop PC via VGA with a dual connection to a 2nd monitor. My desktop dual boots Ubuntu & windows.

(My desktop PC has only VGA connection. No DVI or HDMI) Graphics nvidia dual Quadro nvs290

The problem is I have no access to change the settings on the monitor from VGA to HDMI unless I power up my desktop PC.

When I do this and bring up the monitor menu to enter input select, the ist option VGA is highlighted but when I try to move down to select HDMI the menu disappears therefore I cant change it. Any ideas welcome and appreciated thanks

HDMI does not appear in the BIOS of the desktop PC. Simply not there so of course no options to enable or
disable. Dont know if this affectes the properties of the monitor.

Most monitors should auto sense the input. If the VGA cable is left attached, it may default to that. Have you tried it with only an HDMI cable connected?

Wow thanks for your super fast reply. Please see ky post again as I edited it with reference to no HDMI available in the BIOS.

No I left the VGA cable attached. Too inconvenient to use if i have to unattach the VGA cable every time I want to use the laptop.
however I will try it as it will be a source of further info to find a solution. Thanks again

UPDATE OK tried disconnecting the VGA cable from the desktop pc. connected the hdmi cable to PC & laptop. Nothing except a floating testbox saying no VGA. I think this must be because ther are no compenents in the bios to carry the hdmi signal.

if anyone could confirm this I would be grateful thanks
