can anyone help me here. I've gone round and round with intel download center and cannot find the right package - I am assuming [using common slang] we would refer to this i5 460M [HM57 chipset] as "Generation 1" which seems to have the unfortunate Graphics Processor moniker "GMA HD" which Intel's Download center search function does not recognize.

there is all sort of misinformation floating about: that the driver packages include support backward to Generation 1, for instance. That is false. Various numbering schemes are applied, mostly in error, to the Graphics Processing unit associated with this part. "1000" or "2000" or odd ones like "5750" - following the threads I find on all these comes to the same dead end; Fail.

the laptop is a Inspiron N7010. the dell supported drivers are archaic and incapable of properly supporting HDCP sync thus most HDMI-attach attempts fail. I've been through this on other intel gma's of that generation and the 'cure' if one can find the late drivers is to nuke everything associated with the GMA, then apply the late drivers. they did much better at syncing in the last year...

Intel stoped putting drivers for windows 8 for older graphics than sandy bridge (generation 2) in their site, however, intel provides drivers for these graphics to microsoft, and microsoft integrates drivers into windows 8, so just update your windows, and drivers will come with updates.

By the way, windows 8 already comes with intel hd graphics drivers, just without opengl support, but with updates, you will get opengl 2.1 support.
