    Video driver install problems

Hi all, like everyone else I downloaded the developer preview last night and am starting to play with it. I'm installing on old test hardware, a Dell Inspiron 6000. Win 7 ran beautifully on it, but I'm having problems installing the driver for the ATI X300 built in.

The current video device is the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". I've downloaded the driver for the X300 for both Vista and Win 7 from the Microsoft Update Catalog. I extracted the CAB files to regular folders, then tried to update the driver pointing it at those folders. Both of them give this error when trying to update the driver:

"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
    ATI Mobility Radeon X300
The system cannot find the file specified."

Anyone have any ideas to get around this and get the system using a correct driver?

    Thanks!

    Hello,

I haven't installed Win8 but I assume you would have compatibility mode on Windows 8 as well. Try to run it as compatibility mode with Windows 7.

I'm guessing you mean like an installer? Unfortunately the package from the MS update catalog does not contain an installer (setup), but is rather the bare INF files. So there is nothing to install in compatibility mode. You can download the package (21MB) to see what it contains from here: Microsoft Update Catalog

There's a lot of INF's there, so I've checked them all out and the only ones that reference the x300 is 73150 & 73153.

My big problem is that I'm using old hardware. But with a W7 driver being available, I would hope I could get it installed on here.

I had the same problem with my vaio s1xp and radeon mobility 9700.Downloaded the same driver and the same INFs contain info on my hardware. The solution is really weird.Short version:I needed to copy all the driver files (maybe not all, but I copied all just in case) into a directory called B_72960 inside the directory that contains the unpacked driver files. So I ended up with 2 copies of unpacked files inside one another. With such directory structure prepared, installing the driver worked like a charm.Long version - how I found that (may be helpful if your driver needs another dir name or sthg):Like the message says - the system cannot find the file specified, because it looks in a stupid place (the B_72960 subdir of .inf's dir). I found that through system log (Right click on 'Computer'->Manage->System Tools->Event Viewer->Windows Logs->Application) which records information about driver failing. It also logs where the error report was stored for sending to MS. In my case it was in a hidden dir C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\some_really_long_name. In that dir there's a log file called like LOG*.tmp, which contains information which file the system couldn't find exactly. Hope this helps, cheers!

Sorry for lack of format - I thought it will retain my ENTER presses, but it didn't and now I can't edit... :/

There's another option if an installer crashes and or fails to run.

    Download and install Winrar.
Locate and download the installer for your version of the X300 driver 32 or 64 bit from ATI.
Instead of double clicking to execute it right click to discover a new extract option .
Extract the executable to the destination of choice, the default usually puts it all in a folder in the same directory as the executable.
You can now try to point to the the file by manually updating the driver and browsing to the extracted directory you created looking for a folder aptly named drivers.

You may not get the catalyst program using this method but with a bit of luck you will get a working driver out of it.

So, Windows just decided to install an important update, Nvidia GeForce drivers. Only when it was installing, the screen output went completely black. So I have no idea what's happening at the moment. Any tips? Was thinking of going into safe-mode and uninstalling the driver.

Got the same problem when i installed the new nvidia driver 285.38. After installing the screen just went black.

    edit:

Forgot to run compatibility for the installer. Silly me. LOL! Installed without the black screen.
