Cannot change screen resolution on Windows 8

Hello, I'm not sure that this is the right forum for this question so please bare with me. :)

I built a PC not long ago and I wanted to connect my Toshiba Regza TV to it as a display.
I used a DVI to HDMI cable to connect the PC to the TV. The problem is that that the display shows the OS in a small 700x900 px square, as the following image demonstrates: pic1.jpg . Also, when I try to change the resolution, the options are all greyed.

When I use a HDMI to HDMI for the connection, the OS is shown bigger then the display, as you can see here:
pic2.jpg .

I want to mark that I'm using Intel Core i5 (which has Intel Graphics HD). I have no other display card.

What is causing this problem and how can I solve it? Thanks.

I would guess that the problem is on the TV end, not the computer. You might want to delve into your TV settings and see what PC connection settings it has. You also may have an issue with the TV resolution and the PC resolution not matching up. This happened to me on my previous laptop (gave me black bars on the side) and there wasn't anything I could do about it.

Best of luck.
