Dual Monitor with Windows 8

I am running a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Windows 8. i5 processor with 6GB RAM

The system has 2 Samsung 20" monitors run off a Sapphire HD6450 graphics card both connected via DVI.

There are three problems.

1. When the mouse pointer moves from one screen to the other there is a vertical step of about an inch. Similarly a window flowing from one monitor to the other is offset vertically by an inch.
2. When the system wakes up from a standby period of less than an hour, all shortcuts and windows open on the second monitor are moved to the main monitor.
3. When the system wakes up from a longer period of standby the second monitor is blank and the display is squashed into the first monitor.

This does not happen with Windows 7. The graphics card drivers are up to date.

Does anyone else have these problems?

and this is why i don't have windows 8 on my desktop yet:( i had the same issue with an early beta version and never found a solution.

was kinda weird at the time, i think the quickest resolution was just to unplug the monitor video cable and put it back, but no permanent solution found.

figure i'll have to put windows 8 back on soon so i can find out:(

For #1, in Screen Resolution (or your graphics card setup), you can align the displays vertically. Somehow mine defaulted to different "elevations", but you just drag it back down.

The second two issues sound related to each other - Windows not detecting the monitor on wake. I would check power settings to see if there is something in there.

Thanks for the first answer. I had not lined up the monitor icons exactly in screen resolution. Did not know it was possible. Same in W7!
Still looking at power settings

I bought a dell inspiron 660 that runs windows 8. I want to run dual monitors but it doesn't have a graphics card. Can someone recommend a good one?

You do not need an external graphics card. Just plug in the monitors, and right click on your desktop, select screen resolution, put them to their max, and align them correctly.

Will I be able to have two separate things on each screen? IE if I want to use a word file on one screen and an excel file on the other, will it still work?

Ok, thanks. I was told by the people at dell that I would be unable to use two screens since it doesn't have a graphic card.

If your Dell Inspiron 660 only has onboard VGA output you can only use one screen. However both Dell Inspiron 660s I have bought recently have a graphics card with one VGA and one DVI output, so ypou can use 2 monitors. If no graphics card then you need to buy one which has two outputs, either VGA, DVI or one of each. I am using a Sapphire HD6450 graphics card which is £48 from Amazon. With 2 monitors, you may experience the same problems as I have, (see first post) but I do not think it is related to the card.
