Solved Windows can only find "Microsoft basic display driver"

Hi Guys

Just bought Win8 from their web page and upgraded my win7.

My problem is that I'm stuck with a hopeless resolution because I can't install any display drivers.

As the headline says : Windows can only find "Microsoft basic display driver". When I try to install Nvidia drivers I get the "installation cannot continue" message.

I seriously doubt that it's hardware fault - it worked perfectly before the update to win´8.

Sometimes in the properties for the screen driver, the chiptype is listed as Nvidia, and sometimes it just says N/A...

Specs:

  1. Intel core i3
  2. Mobile Intel[SUP]®[/SUP] HM55 Express chipset
  3. NVIDIA[SUP]®[/SUP] GeForce GT425M Graphics

Here's what I've done - besides googleing for the past 5 hours...:
Updated intel chipset
Tried the guide here: How to Fix NVIDIA Driver Update Installer Error - YouTube ---- this got me a little further but as soon as it tries to access my tv the installation dies (the time of a gfx installation where the screen flickers)
Removed the windows driver.
Uninstalled old nvidia drivers.

Hopefully someone has an idea or solution to this, because frankly, this sucks!

Hi Wizz

I had this exact issue with my asus laptop, would use the intel hd3000, but my nvidia card showed as MBDD. It took me about 2 weeks of digging thru Nvidia's website, and other sources, but eventually got it to work.

In the end i had to uninstall the device, restart, and then install the nvida driver.

You dont state if its a Laptop or Desktop, however this is the driver i used, and got it working.

NVIDIA DRIVERS 306.97WHQL

Here is the desktop version

NVIDIA DRIVERS 306.97WHQL

hopefully that helps

Make sure you have the right drivers - the links above should work.

I made the mistake a few times of grabbing the wrong drivers, i had just gone from using desktop to a laptop when i started using windows 8 RC.

Sad thing is I work in an IT Department:eek:

Thanks for the replies!

Tried what's described above, but unfortunately no luck.

I assume that I should use the notebook one since the 425M is a mobile card - even though its a desktop pc (it's a Asrock Vision3d HTPC)

Add info:
When I boot up it finds a standard driver... however... in the "information about the screen adapter" I have som fields which say "nvidia"
Chip-type : nvidia
DAC-type : nvidia cooperation
card-string : Microsoft basic display adapter (I'm translating this from Danish so I'm not sure that's the English word)
Bios info : GF108 10770002

So it does know that it's a Nvidia?!

I tried to boot up in safe mode, remove the driver and then install, but no luck.

Are you sure you didn't add a little twist to what you did when you removed and installed the driver? ;-)

Hi All

So, tried all suggestions but no luck. Also I had a ticket with MS but the support guy suggested the same things as you did, so no luck there either.

I ended up formatting my harddrive and re-installing windows :( and installing the original driver provided by Asrock when I bought the HTPC - I think it's version 270.xx or something (maybe earlier) - and this worked. I couldn't upgrade the driver to the newest one though.

Found this which is close the problem. WHCL Certified video adapter driver not carried over when upgraded to Windows 8

I had this problem as well. This is how is solved it: I was using a HP Pavillion notebook with AMD Radeon GPU.
PROBS:

  • dxdiag showed display was working OK with all direct X Features enabled, BUT graphics adpter name was Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and only showed 256 MB graphics memory instead of the 2GB in my Radeon Graphics adapter.
  • Device Manager showed display adapter 'working properly', but instead of 'AMD Radeon' as my adapter showed Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
  • GPU-Z AND CPU-Z were all showing Microsoft Basic Display Adapter as my display adaptor.
  • The graphics drivers from HP.com dint work and graphics card was still not detected.
SOLUTION:

  1. I checked my notebook Specs from HP.com website and found that my notebook had AMD Radeon HD 8650M/8670M Dual GPU (1 GB DDR3 dedicated). This was the only way since device manager, dxdiag, system info, CPU-Z and GPU-Z were all showing Microsoft Basic Display Adapter as my adapter name!!
  2. I went to the amd site: Download Drivers , System: Notebook, Family: Radeon HD Series, Product: Radeon HD 8xxxM Series, OS: Windows 8
  3. Download Driver
  4. Install and finally worked.
