has it already been called "8"?

not that it really matters, i guess. but, did MS say the next OSes will follow the # naming convention?

:)

We have had win 95. Win 98 Win 2000. Maybe Windows 2012 is in the making. 212 for short.

I do not recall them stating it, but until we get a legit name directly from Microsoft, we will just continue to call it 8.

Personally its easier to say in conversation;

Hey dude guess what!? I just found a leaked version of Windows 8!

As to;

Hey dude guess what!? I just found a leaked version of the next version of Windows!

People didn't really like the whole 'fancy name' thing with Vista, everyone loves how they kept W7 simple. :) I would assume they will continue this path if it works out well for them.

Subtle references...

There have been numerous "subtle" references to Windows 8 in some of the M$ blogs, speeches, and on the internet.

It seems that they (M$) have learned their mistake with name (Millinium, Vista) vs. number (95, 98, 2000) and I feel that to follow the numbering sequences (7, 8, 9) will be the norm from now on.

Just logical, but we all know that logics sometimes just don't apply if the powers to be deem differently...

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll have to check my subscription settings in the CP because I never received any notices.

I think after a successful launch of 7 they would call their next release 8. Possibly a code name first, but we'll see sooner or later.

Windows 8's codename will either be Midori

And if it turns out that it's not, my guess is that the codename will be Disappointing

Midori sounds awesome though. Would hate to have to wait to Windows 9 or 10 (see how easy it is to talk about future versions of Windows now!) to get all the stuff Midori is.

The thing is, that everyone is getting geared up for a so called "Windows 8". If Microsoft goes off with some other name, that is going to a) disrupt the flow of the OS's causing people to have their doubts and b) Confuse people that want to keep it simple.

So if you ask me, Microsoft is quite likley to call it Windows 8.
