Solved Getting used to a new OS

Granted many people think 'the thing formerly known as Metro' is a very dumb idea, as did I not too long ago, I am beginning to see some potential.

I figure if I can learn many of the keyboard shortcuts to get around, it can be quite a snap. And although it was made for touch screen (and the mouse seems a bit rocky), it is working out pretty well.

I dual booted it up with Win7 and have discovered a few things. At first, coming from Win7, it was hard as my granny's bones trying to navigate, but once I got used to it, it seemed fine, although a little rocky, as I've said.

I discovered the desktop and what do you know, but it isn't that different from 7 (more square). That part made it feel like they just overlapped 7 with 8.

Some things just confuse me: aside from the desktop, why is it so hard to go to settings, etc? Am I missing something? Do you install from the desktop or Metro (formerly known as...)? Navigating Metro is becomming easier, but I know I'm missing it. I find myself in the desktop constantly pointing to the 'start button', only to end up clicking a link to an app in Metro (formerly...). The only way to go to metro is by clicking the start button.

It was fun looking through those apps and seeing all the new stuff you can do, and have everything in one place. Like I said, it has a ton of potential. But it may be lacking. Perhaps its just me and not fully knowing what I can do with what I've got. What do I click to go different places? What key combos do I need to memorize?

Anyone feeling like I do? It seems many just outright hate it. I would never go that far, and I am trying my best to learn it before I make any judgement. Is it worth 15$ to upgrade? Can you clean install with upgrade like in 7?

All these questions, perhaps I should take a breath and allow anyone else to put up a comment. If you hate it, be constructive and say why. If you love it, do the same. Thanks

There is still a button down in the lower left. You have to hover your mouse in the corner, and the start menu button appears.

You can get to settings by using Win+C and clicking Settings on the right, or moving the mouse to the lower right corner, or Win+X for "power user" settings.

Thanks! Once I get the hang of it, I'm sure it will be very handy.

Wasn't there supposed to be a new thing where updates don't force a restart? Every update I've had required a restart...

No, although MS has worked to reduce restarts from updates over the years.. Other OS's, like Linux and OSX may allow you to install updates without a reboot, but until the service that depends on it restarts, you're still vulnerable. That means if your computer is up for a month, you may have a false sense of security.

Yea I read in the updates that it said if nothing is done, in 2 days it will force a restart of the computer. interesting.

Like I said, this is all fun for me, and I am enjoying it. Any other advice you guys or anyone else for that matter would like to share with me, bring it on! Still considering the Win8 upgrade but not sure if I truely want it. I'm thinking Win8 is doing a little bit better on speed, which I like.

Welcome back, DustSailor. I see you've been around since 11/11. Sea duty out of San Diego perhaps? Just curious, for I see you're in southern Cal. Avatar gives a hint also. I have a son who was stationed there.

I'm a keyboard shortcut user. I'm sure you've seen A Guy's list. Shortcuts with keys via Brink's tutorials I find very helpful also. I'm not fond of the mouse. Never have been. I guess I'll be liking a new touch screen I want to get soon and eying the Surface Pro. I need a traveling machine. Some sort of hybrid anyway.

All in all, I think 8 to be an fast, secure, and innovative OS with some useful new features. I call it the transitional OS, for touch is the new wave of navigation. :)

Glad you're into 8!

One of the best tips I find is the best to take advantage of the Start Screen and the Desktop, it to make Desktop items appear on Start.

Go on the Desktop, right click on a folder, hard/network drive, Library, or a Control Panel item; and hit Pin to Start. Go to Start, scroll over to the right (or click on the Semantic view button and click the far right group of tiles) and drag around the newly made tiles where you want them. Group them if you'd like.

Within the immersive apps, you can right click within them, that pulls up the app command bar. Pulling up the side Start bar, or Charms bar, and hit Settings and you have some things to tinker around with. Charms are used to navigate, search, or share content within the apps.

Regardless of whatever you're in, pull up the Start bar, hit settings, and at the bottom there's a link that says PC Settings. This takes you into a condensed Control Panel of commonly used settings. One of which is Personalize, which allows you to change the Start Screen colors and patterns, lock screen, ect.

Have fun!

No, no, something much more garish. I just thought it sounded cool. I live in the desert (2 hours from the nearest beach). What we do here is we go dust sailing. We ride bikes over treeless hills (or mountains, depending on perspective). Or we ride 'earthboards' down hills, you know, desert things.

I've been on the forums a bit, mostly on Sevenforums because eight hasn't been released yet. In fact, I only now installed a dual boot with 8. Suddenly I decided to try it out and see if the pro's and con's about it hold true, and determine if I could use it. Speed is the number 1 desire for me, and it is looking rather good. Don't think I'll mind forking 15$ to upgrade when it gets running (meaning I may want to pass on an early start to avoid any 'bumps').

Anyway, Hippsie: a big thanks to your son for his service, I really respect that.

And thank you all for the guidance, it is helping tremendously.

Noticed that Win8 seems to load much more quickly than 7, though it may just be my computer. And everything is ready in a snap. The simplicity is appealing to me. I might not be able to afford Office 2013 when it comes out, but the preview is making me jealous.

I thought of getting surface, but I think I would prefer an ultrabook because I make use of the cover lid. I own a laptop and probably will hold on to it for another 5 years or so before I upgrade. My desktop is what I am considering upgrading because it is where I listen to music in the house, use the internet on it, and play games. I try to keep it current without spending too much money on it. 15$ is two dinners for me, so not too much.

Oh! Ok. I see. The athletic, adventurous type. That is the cool! I'm not sure garish is the correct word. Too negative to me. What you do is constructive. Exercise is good. It'll stick with you the rest of your life. I was fortunate to live close to a river when young. Spent many a day skiing. Personal records were one hour and fifty minutes without falling or giving up. 2-12 times encircling the boat. I saw someone do it at a Tommy Bartlet show in the Wisconsin Dells. Just had to try it.

Thanks for the comment about my son. :) We're very proud of him! He served 6 years. He just finished his last year at Great Lakes naval base. He joined the reserves and is going to college under the GI bill. I will mention to him what you said for sure!

Thanks for the rep! Just passing on what I've learned. Great forum!

8 is quick, especially on older machines like mine. I'm pushing the envelope. :)

Haha I stink at water skiing. But I have gotten up before; never liked falling, which I tend to do often. As I am in the desert, most water they find, they guard like the president. I don't travel but once a year, so I don't have the opportunity to practice much on it.

I noticed the install time for Win8 was pretty quick too. One thing I was curious about: Some websites attempt to keep you from copying their material by preventing Right-click, which I use to make the tab and search bars pop up. I wonder if there is a keyboard shortcut for this (other than the mouse); I may have to read more on those tutorials.

One of the nifty things about technology is that it can circumvent technology! :) Go to Start, type in snip or snipping tool and hit enter. You can make a little snippet of the screen.

Yea, some of them you can also highlight the text and simply press Ctrl+C. But I wasn't sure how to pull up the address search bar or the tabs at the top, if you are using IE10 in 'app' mode. I did find out that if you press the Start key shortcut twice, it will take you back to IE10 and display the address bar, to which you can navigate away from the copy paranoid site.

Or you can just right click anywhere on the screen which brings up the address bar and current tabs that are open.

Yes, and I do. But specifically on the sites that do not allow right click? When I Right click the site, a pop-up appears which says that is does not allow copying of its site (copy paranoid). I haven't encountered many of these websites, but It happens from time to time. Is there a keyboard shortcut for cycling through the tabs? There was one for windows 7 but I forgot it.

Ah, thanks mate! I'll post back anything else I find.

I'm really liking those apps that come with it too.

I've noticed a few odd behaviors (bugs) that will probably be ironed out later, like the browser spasming, but it was temporary.
Thanks!

I haven't tried this, but I imagine you could move your mouse to the top of the screen, and right-click when it turns to a hand.

Not to be critical, but no matter where one right clicks on IE 10 Modern (Metro), it pops up the tab menu. Left click the navigation bar pops up the favorites (pinned) and recent bar. A total different animal than desktop IE.

Yes, to navigate around tabs in the immersive IE, you do right click, BUT, you need to right click within empty space within the site such as a text box. Or, if you move your mouse over to the scroll bar section on the page, you can right click and go to different tabs, this is especially helpful if you're faced with a large image that takes up the whole screen. ;)

Another tip for immserive IE is on the tab bar, there is a little icon that has a ... in it, which you can open an InPrivate tab or hit close all tabs, which clears out your current tabs if you don't need them anymore and just keeps your current open one there.
