What is a proper desktop?
Does Windows 8 have a proper desktop?
Is Windows 8 better than any of the following?
Is Windows 8 a design by "marketing" or an improvement on the past?

The term "proper" here makes no sense. "proper" infers there is some standard or qualitative measurement of what a desktop is, and there is no such thing.

As such, the rest of your questions are moot.

What is a proper desktop?
Unsure what proper means. It does include a classic desktop for running apps in a normal Windows fashion.

A "proper" desktop doesn't exist, I just like messing with it for hours. 8 is the same, and I won't consider Metro my desktop for another at least 5 years. Sorry about the negativity, I always hate being negative!

I like my 8 desktop the way it came, and I just always like to keep my desktop tidy!

A proper desktop is what YOU want to make of it. Metro severely restricts that choice. If what Metro offers fits ones needs then great, otherwise it simply gets in the way of having and using a desktop "properly" (as in my case).

Actually, the OP's statement is biased, as in his case "proper" refers to all other desktops before Windows 8, accepting them as a basis for measurement and comparison, as is also evidenced by the pictures he has posted.

Actually, many editors also jumped on this bandwagon, blaming Microsoft for violating a ton of desktop design rules with this experiment, concluding that as a result Windows 8 doesn't have a "proper" desktop, or at least not one fit for desktop use.

Instead of asking questions we all know and see the answer to, we are better off asking will this kill Windows 8 on the desktop, will it stimulate Linux adoption and growth as Valve port their games, will other game companies also follow suit and start stimulating Linux adoption by porting games to Ubuntu, will we even see a day when an AAA title comes out for Linux but not for Windows, and how are end-users going to actually respond to all this madness ?

We have some interesting 3 years ahead of us.

Yes, very true.

Metro severely restricts that choice.

I use it every day with many programs, ... do not find there to be any severe restrictions

IMO, Correct. IMO, There is no such thing as a proper desktop.

all other desktops before Windows 8, accepting them as a basis for measurement and comparison

... I include the 8 desktop as well. The 8 desktop is no less "proper" than the desktop of Windows NT or 7.
There is no such thing as a proper desktop.
