Hi, My first post and hopefully in the correct place.
I have been using W7 since it's release in the UK and it fulfills all my needs. However, being of quite advanced years I also look upon my computer as a hobby and means of mental exercise.
To this end I want the new mental challenge of learning W8 but have no wish to obtain a Touch Screen. Can anyone please advise the suitability of using W8 with standard keyboard and mouse.
In addition prior to the introduction of W7 there was made available a small tool which one could download and scan one's computer to be advised on compatibility & suitability of both hardware and software; is such a tool available to assess the PC prior to purchasing/installing W8.
Thank you,
Yorky.

It takes some time getting used to but I'm enjoying it so far. You don't NEED a tablet to use it.

Thank you Omlet, I've spent some little time today reading posts on this site and also checking out some of my programs for compatibility. What I've read so far is taking me closer to W8; I expect another day or so of investigation will clinch the deal and get my old brain-box a good workout.
Regards.

Yes, Windows 8 is great with a mouse and keyboard navigation. The only difference here is the UI and how the mouse is used now. It takes a few days to get the hang of it bit afterwards, it's fast and efficient; that is if you have your Start Screen efficiently organized.

I advice you to buy and use Windows 8 as your main OS. It's incredibly fast and easy to use, even with the mouse. You don't need a touchscreen to use it, so you have not to spend more money buying one.

If you have any further questions, let us know and we will help you.

BTW I am very happy, cauze I just realized that PES 2013 is compatible with Windows 8. (with install of proper card drivers)

Learning W8 is definitely not a mental challenge. If you want to see what software is compatible just download the W8 Enterprise evaluation and run it with the upgrade option. It will check system and software compatibility and give you a report of software that may be an issue. You can cancel after you get your report.

I use a mouse and keyboard and have no problems with Windows 8. I will definitely get it on Oct. 26 when it's released.

Thanks to you all for your prompt and constructive replies. I have been and will continue to investigate further the Tutorials within this excellent Forum and I've already taken note and printed out the advice on setting-up your Desktop right from the start. I also intend to download the Windows 8 evaluation to discover any problem items; not that I expect much of a problem there as I've recently just replaced my PC in July.
Thanks again and I can safely say I'll be running Windows 8 before October is out.

Btw check the programs you are currently using in Windows 7 for compatibility issues with Windows 8. I think that this is another factor you must take into consideration before buying the software.
