Built in zip feature

Does anyone know a way of enabling the built in zip feature but not have zip files displayed as folders in Explorer and wherever else? I use a program that needs to use the zip feature but I really hate how zips show up as folders. I know how to disable the zip feature but that results in my program not being able to utilize zip processing.

TIA

Brink...

I was just looking at that and don't think that is what I am looking for.

The program I use (SIV) needs the built in zip in order to unzip and install updates to itself. If I disable the zip feature completely the program will not unzip and update, I have to do it manually. Granted, doing it manually is no big deal but I figured if there was a way to do what I want to do the guys here would know how.

The program depends on the Registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E88DCCE0-B7B3-11d1-A9F0-00AA0060FA31} being present. It looks for this key to determine if it can unzip. No key no unzip. Seems the W7 tutorial requires that you delete this key.

I've been working with the author of SIV for some years. He just introduced this new way of unzipping and updating his program in his latest beta. He uses the built in zip feature so he can actually unzip his updates to his program while it is running. You can't do that if you use WinRAR, 7-Zip, etc., you'll get an error message about the program being open.

I need to keep the key and the functionality but not have zip files show up as folders. It's a personal preference thing. I hate zip files showing up as folders. I use 7-Zip as my default zip, rar, etc., program.

Seems like an issue that may need to be sorted with SIV. :(

Ray, the author, is keeping it the way it is. He likes the fact that he can update in place by using the built in zip feature. Ever use SIV? It's one amazing piece of system software. It can be intimidating though because it presents soooooo much information on everything.

Why not just simply set ZIP to open with another piece of software by default? For instance, WinRAR or 7-Zip? Change the default program.

Agreed. 7-Zip is much better.
