Solved XP capabilities in Windows 8

I recently discovered that had I upgraded to Win 7 Pro, I could be using some of
my older software on my 64 bit machine rather than on my old clunky laptop
running 32 bit Win 7.
Does anyone have a clue about the XP capabilities of
Win 8? Would it be stupid to fork out the $90 to upgrade to Win 7 Pro now, or
will it be some time before Win 8 can be proven not to choke on older
software?

Thanks, Rich

Compatability is similar to windows 7, but slightly worse. If it doesn't run on win7, then it probably won't run on 8. Also, there is no"xp mode" in windows 8, so if you use that, don't upgrade.

Thanks for the info. I use some older automotive manuals and some genealogy programs that will not load on my 64 bit machine. As I understand it, Microsoft makes a program to load that will enable your 64 bit Win 7 to run these older programs. I tried to DL it but it required a Pro version to even DL it. They run fine in 32 bit mode, but I hate to take steps backwards for something that I don't use that much. But things like the schematics look horrible on my little laptop and there are no zoom features. I guess a dual boot option could be another solution.

That program for windows 7 is "xp mode." It is essentially an XP virtual machine with integration, so all XP programs should run in it, and integrate seamlessly with the desktop. Unfortunately, windows 8 does not have that feature available. Windows Virtual PC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
