Windows Explorer Thumbnails not getting saved

Not matter how many times I let Explorer build the thumbnails, after any reboot or shutdown/power-on the thumbnails get erased and I have to rebuild them again. It happens with all images and videos the same. Any idea why is this happening?

IMO, Windows 8 is definitely cool, but it has some rough edges that should've been ironed out before prime time.

It looks like either this is an isolated issue or people just don't pay any mind to it. :S

exactly, its quite annoying. when you check the thumbnail cache in system clean up it shows only 1 mb. adding to this video thumbnails generating everytime entering the video folder is frustrating

Is where you are storing your pictures and videos a network location like a NAS share? If YES then your thumbnails won't be cached because network locations are not indexed. If you want the network location to be indexed you need to make the files available offline so that a cached copy is made local which can be indexed. However that defeats the purpose of having files on a NAS share to begin with so it's not really a solution. This has been an issue since Windows 7.

If it is local to the computer then either add the location to a library or check your index options and make sure the location is being indexed.

Neither files in the library nor in the index are free from this issues. Thumbnails are not remembered anywhere, not even in the local drive.

This is totally pathetic. The kind of bug you gotta make sure not to appear in your final product. C'mon Microsoft!

I think the temp fix for this is to clear out or remove your thumbnail cache and restart your windows 7/8 pc and let the thumbnails rebuild it again..
it works on my windows 8 (RTM) PRO x64, but do not know it will re-occurs after few days or restarts...

That doesn't work, at least for Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation.

I tried things today.. Such as:

Windows 8 | Stop Deletion of Thumbnail Cache - YouTube

Open
Control Panel>>
Search For (Edit group policy)>>
open it then choose
(User Configuration) >>(Administrative Templates) >>(Windows Components)>>(File Explorer)>>
disable (Turns off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files.)

This does not work after a reboot. Win7 never lost thumbnails like this, it appears to be an open and annoying bug.

I was very wary of changing system permissions on deep down folders like that that solution suggested. I tried it and they still deleted on reboot, maybe I didn't do it quite right, but I got rid of it. I hope this is on their radar cause it reminds me of how slow Vista was with network copies pre-SP1. This will probably (hopefully) be a service pack type fix.

Well it shouldn't require a service pack. It's just a simple Windows Update update. Unless MS has screwed up somewhere really bad that it requires too many changes to be made to fix the problem. I don't believe that they don't know this problem exists.

As long as explorer.exe crashes often when thumbnails aren't deleted, i think they screwed it up big time. It may crash because it doesn't have the permission to delete things but that would be weird.

They messed up really bad on this. Someone above said it would be a simple windows update, but then they wouldn't take this long to fix it. I think this is a fundamental issue that needs an SP. Frankly, I don't think it would be too unlikely if the thumbnail cache issue lasts the entire lifespan of Win8. Something is wrong.
