Solved What Windows 8 [Metro] Apps might be useful on a 24-inch monitor?

So far I haven't seen any Windows 8 apps that make sense for a 24-inch monitor. Of course there aren't very many available yet so the question might be better stated as "What Windows 8 apps imagined for tablet or smaller screens would be useful on a 24-inch monitor?" Of course you can run all of them on such a large screen but I've looked at weather and news and find them to be a terrible waste of space. It would seem like running them in a smaller window of your choice (like BlueStac) would make more sense.

I am developing applications that maximizes content per screen, it also won the 2012 International Windows 8 Hackathon, so Microsoft approves!

In the future I might add another grid for the right, so I can space things out a little and add more content.

On a large, widescreen display, I'd snap one of the Windows RT apps (weather or one of the music ones) to the small side, and use the desktop on the remaining space.

Great! That looks like a reasonable amount of information if it is all on the screen at one time. Other apps also have large amounts of information but presented in small amounts taking the whole screen then you have to scroll to get to the other parts.

Yes, that feature is some help however the app may take more room than the displayed information requires. Since I use 2 monitors that method does leave enough room to get some multi-window work done.

You're right. I often use a large part of a screen for photo programs. Hopefully the designer of such apps will allow large amounts of content on the screen.

Some good answers. Thanks! I hope some app designers see this thread. I'm looking forward to using Windows 8 as my experience using the desktop on 2 monitors has been good.

It's too bad Metro is a one monitor only, full screen only GUI. IMHO its crippled right out of the box.

Interesting comment since the thread is about apps taking up too much of the screen with too little information. I'm very happy with Windows 8 for getting some real work done using the desktop.

Answer to the OP: Fullscreen games Real-time games(not solitare) demand all of your attention, so they deserve to be fullscreen. Everything else is better in a window.

On a large screen, especially if you only have the one screen, being able to resize a Metro App might be convenient. If you can't change the content at least you could make it easier to look at. Plus it would free up some screen space for a desktop program. The way it is now, if you only have one monitor, its metro or the desktop. You can't split screen them.

Lots of APPS are useful on a large screen monitor.
Pinball, Television, Music Maker Jam, The Big Picture, Wikipedia, Reader etc... they are not resizable but can be snapped to the edge like thumbnails. And the desktop can be split screen with metro apps although limited to one size only snappy size. Not really a waste of space since they all run in their own space (it's safer and more technically efficient). They can be thumbed like a jump list - the same with the desktop - as a thumb to switch to.

In a dual monitor setup, you could even have metro apps running on one monitor and the desktop on the other monitor.

Those are some really good examples of Windows 8 [Metro] wasting space on a large monitor. Use the whole thing for half a dozen items... crazy.

Sorry, I apologize, but I do not follow your line of reasoning. They seem quite useful to me. I was never a fan of clutter anyway.
These new features are quite interesting for a few folks who appreciate them.

Why on earth would "Wikipedia" need or want to be run full screen on a 24 in monitor?!?!?

Well maybe if you had your Browser running at +6 font sizes because you were hard of seeing, but for everyone else... wasted screen real estate.

And that's the beauty of the desktop, you can run any or all those apps full screen or not as the /user/ desires! Metro, no choice (Well a couple choices, both bad for multitasking).

I guess some of us like clutter :) I have about 60 small icons on the left side of one of my monitors with shortcuts to all my often used files and programs. They take up about 5% of one monitor hence 2.5% of my total screen area. Start Button.... what start button I mostly use it to get to Control Panel and that could be an icon too.
