Windows Media Player is now and add-on, rather than the necessity it was in XP days. What Microsoft once built 1,000's of computers based around is finally becoming an "option" on SOME devices.

I think having it as an add-on is a great idea. There are those that say why should I buy something that used to be free not realizing that the cost of it was part of the OS cost. At least as an add-on those that don't use it don't have to pay for it.

Unless if you have Media Center apps like Netflix or have a TV tuner card, bleh, no need.

Plus, the over the top Aero/Aurora UI is a great antithesis to the modern, modest, metro design...

Though they share some underlying code, Windows Media Center (WMC) and Media Player (WMP) are not the same thing. WMC is the only software on any computer that can use CableCARD, so it is a necessity for that. It also is required for people who use extenders. For everything besides DVR and extender usage, there is much better software out there.

Since extender was like Microsoft's "tie it all together" software to try to match what Apple has with all it's airplay etc (In fact it came first I believe), it's VERY surprising that that is left off as an optional add on that will virtually never be installed :( They removed it from WHS as well which was odd (Before killing off WHS all together).

Microsoft is trying to catch up to Apple but then killing off a lot of what had potentional to do that. They give, they take, they give, they take, and never stick with, polish or market anything to fruition :(

Speaking of Apple like, that "Hi" on the RTM installer... That was the most Appletastic moment yet, I threw up a little in my mouth when I saw it...
