Solved Win8 RP - No DVD detected

First off, I just want to say that after using the release preview for a few weeks now, I am impressed (compared to win 7). I am yet to find something that is harder (for me) to do in win8 compared to win7. And I like the ribbon options in folders now + the boot time is insanely fast.

But anyway, my question is:
My dvd drive was working perfectly until I played around a bit with my computer to get my new graphics card working. Now windows 8 no longer detects my dvd drive.
I've tried the reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
Also tried to deleting the Upper and lower filter and no good.
DVD drive is detected in BIOS, and does work when I switch back to win7.

Anyone have a third solution to this problem?
Thanks

Hi mandar and welcome to Windows 8 Forums

Exactly what did you do to get your new graphics card working? It should have no bearing on the optical drive. As it is detected by the BIOS and works in Windows 7, there is nothing wrong with the drive itself or cabling. Is it still listed in Device Manager? If so, highlight the drive and then click the Uninstall icon (the one with a red cross on it). Reboot your system, and it should redetect the drive and install it correctly.

To get the graphics card going I updated BIOS, and installed a new driver. Not too sure how or why it affected my dvd drive, but since doing stuff in BIOS, win8 hasn't detected it. (NOTE: BIOS does detect my dvd drive). I don't know if it would matter, but I did unplug my dvd drive while putting in the new graphic card, but I can promise you, it is all plugged in exactly the same.

The driver was detected in device manager when I selected 'show hidden devices', so I deleted it, but didn't get re-detected on reboot. And, when I revert back to windows 7 on my secondary HDD, the dvd drive is sweet. Load up win8 off my SSD, and no dvd. That tells me it has to be a win8 issue somewhere?

I'm not aware of anyone having to update their BIOS in order to install a new graphics card. Usually, BIOS updates concern things such as memory and processor compatibility, and, in some cases, system stability.

Have you tried a repair install, or even a full reinstallation of Windows 8 ?

I didn't have to update BIOS, but at the time I thought it was a possible reason as to why the graphic card wasn't detected. Turns out i needed the latest driver (for win7, not the win8 driver) and the driver on the CD didn't work.
Updating BIOS shouldn't do any harm though (should be beneficial), and in windows 7, the updated BIOS has no 'conflicting' issues with the dvd drive.

I might try a repair/reinstall soon, but It is soo painful reinstalling all the programs again, and it may not even be the solution.

If you go to the View tab in Folder Options, there is an option to hide empty drives in the Computer Folder. If its checked unckeck it and see if that helps. Does the DVD drive show up in disk management?

Alpha - Nah didnt detect dvd drive.

Ended up reinstalling windows and picked up the dvd driver, yay. Still perplexed as to why the normal 'fixes' wouldn't detect it.

Thanks guys
