The real genius of windows 8!

The real genius of windows 8 isn’t in the structure of the metro screen; it’s in the potential of the app store or in the Linux world the repository. Linux / unix has been using them system for far longer than anyone else. But it’s the ability to add software with 0 efforts that makes windows 8 more flexible. We can argue into forever about rather or not the metro screen is more efficient, however that isn’t the real power, it’s in the selection of apps people make and rather or not MS can make the available or not that will make or break this. I for one am excited about that possibility. Annoying issues with the screen can be fixed, but the repository can’t be overlooked as just some worthless add on. In the near future gone will be the days of installing software with 6 plus toolbars and the changes to home screen to go with it. Just seamlessly add your software without even a prompt to the next button. That is more efficient and time saving than standard install, not to mention more securely. Because of the controls placed on the app store you won’t be downloading software from potentially dangerous sources like you could before even if you thought it was safe. Viruses will be cut waayyyyyy down there is all kinds of advantages to this no one here is talking about.

I know there are plenty of techies here, including myself that know how to avoid the toolbars, viruses and malware. I have fixed many computers for people who could not. The desktop will be good to us as always but the real power of windows 8 is in the app store potential.

It will be interesting to see for sure, I have said more or less the same thing before, if there are 10's of thousands of apps that are worthwhile and cheap than it has a chance but right now with a clumsy UI, only 99 apps and nothing really out doing windows 7 at the moment it is going to be a hard sell unless of course you put it on a touch screen mobile device, for us home desktop pc users it's not looking all that great right now.

Trust me, I am already there, however, I'm going to give it the opportunity to show me success or fail. I wrote a 3 page single spaced review on windows 8 that I deleted because I'm a bit of a maverick and I see potential in this like I see in Linux desktop although Linux desktop has a ways to go. If they give us both high quality and mobile apps it will work greatly but if it remains nothing but a mobile app repository than it may fail. The real tool in Linux is the repositories that give you access from cheap games to full office suits if MS does that that it will ROCK!

You make an interesting point, slacker3343, and only time will tell if that potential is tapped to any great extent.

Most Windows users (myself included) are accustomed to the way Windows has always done things. It's going to take a little effort to get people to realize what's available and how they can make use of what they have available.

Just a case in point: when I installed Windows 8 for the first time I wondered "what happened to all the games? Windows has always included a few games." Then I opened the Microsoft Store and found all kinds of games and tons more that I didn't know even existed. How do we tell people "hey, there's lots of stuff available to you - come take a look"?

Heh I would not call being the very LAST one to the party anything like "Genius".

As you point out Linux (And of course Android, iOS and OSX) have been doing this forever. FINALLY Windows joins the party and it's Genius? Hahaha...

I was thinking the same as you, but did not want to say as much since I'm new. Glad you said it first. :)

No offense to anyone!

Nah, I didn't interpret your post as grumpy or anything like it. :) To be honest, I have very little usage of RTM. I installed it on a laptop for my bro and he is I.T. illiterate to the fullest. I saw him messing with IE Metro and I said most of us don't like that area of the system. He was like "ya, I don't like it" but kept on using it like he did when he actually does know how to get to Firefox desktop I made for him lol.

He was on pof.com so maybe the automatic full screen view had something to do with it since I showed him F11 numerous times for FF but he fails to remember. lol

Ok, I get it everyone is having fun with me calling it genius. I thought about that when I wrote it and left it that way. It will really be the driving force behind rather or not it will be success. It was poor word choice I admit it.

haha no, there is no sarcasm intended from me, nor anything else negative. I'm just chillin' in a good mood despite crappy circumstances. :)

I'm not offended at all  I can will admit if I'm wrong....when you start a thread like this you have to be willing to take a few hits and I enjoy that. That doesn't phase me just wanting to make sure I said "I get it"! But I can tell you, from the stand point of windows 8 viability I'm not wrong. Just hopeful but I'll keep my copy of windows 7 and UE linux handy.

Often the developer is able to provide programs free - because of the toolbars etc that are offered.

What is going to happen to all those great free programs?

What effect is MS taking a 30% going to have on the cost of programs - and what is the situation going to be with free versions - the ones that are pretty good on their own, but they hope you are going to buy the pro version?

Metro apps will contain built in ads and the free programs will get paid that way (supposedly). I mean that is the plan. How the programmer gets paid and how much is a bit of a mystery but theoretically that's the way it's going to work.

People will just write it off as an Apple Appstore ripoff, I don't get how MS had the market for decades and only until Apple has a successful Appstore and they have to latch on to the idea.

As an IT admin I can download all my subscription software from the same place for many years and no place to do that for Retail Windows apps.

Well Apple had a rather small closed market. It was a lot easier for them to set up an app store system.

Microsoft has traditionally let other people do their own thing with windows. And it really has worked well that way. I'm not sure that Windows NEEDS an app store really, well though with everyone else going that way they sort of have to now. If I am going to buy software on-line though, I'd just as soon pay a developer directly so that they get ALL the money, not just 70% of it with a 30% "doing buisness with you" tax going to Microsoft.

The idea that Microsoft is going to be making money of of other peoples products AND advertising in Windows besides selling Windows itself now is a bit disconcerting, even if it is almost a forgone conclusion tat they have to (because everyone else is).

Let's face facts apple ripped it off from Linux/Unix. But I understand the apple freaks well they think apple invented everything. But most of this technology used today by Apple / Android is linux/unix based they are making billions of open sources material Apple will never admit it and Android is another flavor of Linux all on its own.

Microsoft if putting and maintaining the infrastructure to support the Apps, they ensure the security is there so that they are clean and safe and also ensure that Apps are not pirated. This all benefits the developer so that they can make their money but it comes at a cost which is the 30% take. I can't imagine that you would think Android method is better considering there is no control or protection for the developers and users end up getting Apps with virus'.

That 30% Microsoft charges drops to a lower percentage if the App sells well, this will hopefully entice developers to make useful Apps as opposed to stupid fart Apps. You don't have to be a full fledged programmer to create Apps, even the hobbyist that can do a little programming can make some money by developing Apps. I don't see where the issue is, its a win win situation and that includes the user who has a choice to install Apps or not. Lastly, Microsoft does not advertise in Windows, Ads are restricted to Apps and those are usually free with the option to purchase to remove ads.

Or the apps on android get pirated, which is silly considering android itself is almost a pirated copy of ios! :D

And as for the toolbars being was to keep the app free, there are two routes. Charge $1.49 for the app, or mitigate advertising into the app, which so far has been kept to near the end of the app's panorama.
