Well nothing on the technet site yet.

Would be nice if they posted things by midnight on the day it was supposed to come out, but then it's only a rumor that it'll be out today anyway.

I hadn't been on the site in a while and was pretty disappointed to see that for the second time in two years they have completely nerfed the content, features and usage restrictions again :(

At least they haven't raised the price while restricting the benefits at the same time :/

Which things in particular are you upset about?

I know lots were up in arms about having their 10 key count dropped to 5, and then dropped to 2. But it's a multi-activation key. If you can have 10 active machines per key, that would give you 20 copies of Windows 7 Home, 20 copies of Windows 7 Pro, 20 copies of Windows 7 Ultimate. That seems unbelievably generous for the cost of a technet account.

You can thank those jackholes who bought technet subscriptions and then decided to sell 8 or 9 of their product keys for a profit. They are the reason that Microsoft cracked down. Even small computer shops bought a $200 copy of Technet, and then sold license after license, after license for $100 a pop and made thousands on their $200 investment. That was a blatent misuse of the program.

Seems to be lot less available. If you look under Windows - looks like only win7, win8 and just for a laugh the old 3.1

I am sure there used almost every o/s available before.

Is it only 2 keys now for Technet Pro?

You can thank those jackholes

As usual , it is a few idiots who muck it up for everyone else.

Wasn't the word that it would be available at "noon" on August 1. I would assume that's "noon Redmond time" (PDT, or GMT-7). That's a little while yet.

I'll still believe it when I see it out there (or I read it here :)). I am planning a backup of my netbook today just in case, though.

Yeah they removed like 2/3rds of the product/versions from the list.

Plus they put in a new clause to specifically deny you the use of any of the software after your subscription lapses, including revoking the keys. I mean it makes sense but they were being "nice" about it before, not any more though.

Suspiciously this happened just two weeks ago, before the release of Win 8 :)

FSeal, I am looking through the verbiage of the Technet site and cannot find any mention of revoking the keys with a subscription lapse. You cannot claim NEW keys with an elapsed subscriptions so claim all of the keys you will need and store them somewhere or make a copy of the "My Product Keys" webpage. Also, while you cannot download the other versions of Windows, you can still get keys for them in the "My Product Keys" dropdown (XP keys are there for instance) . There should be copies of the .iso floating around...

Here is the post about deactivating keys:

Microsoft may deactivate or otherwise limit your keys when your subscription ends.

This is under suspicious activities, like having keys spread around in different regions, too many activations, etc.

True they don't say specifically that they will instantly terminate the keys, they say in a lot of places that when your subscription ends you MUST stop using the software and you MUST destroy all copies of downloaded software. They never used to say that. Also, the section on determining misuse of keys is not specific, they only list one (of probably dozens) of reasons for it, but to be safe I think you would have to assume that if your subscription lapses and you tried to use a key to activate a new install afterwards, that would be "suspicious" and it would possibly be revoked.

Currently installed software will of course not instantly stop working but (now), continued use of it is a specific violation and I would think that it could fail future "genuine" checks when updating from WU or installing further MS software, at least for the items that require "activation".

I think pro comes with 3. I didn't mention it since I doubt many here have use for any of the enterprise software.

Hi there
I posted the antidote to this in another thread -- if for example on TechNet you search for "Windows XP" you will get all the download links etc for Windows XP back again -- but I'd suggest if you want this stuff download it quickly since I don't know if the search is the result of some bad programming or is it the intention to withdraw a lot of the older OS'es.

I really hate it when people try and get too clever and dumb down search queries -- I can usually find stuff on google that the young one syllable mobile phone texters wouldn't be able to find in a million years -- the great thing about google is that it allows you to ask intelligent questions -- if you ask a silly badly phrased question then you will get a lot of junk results.

I really think that once you start dumbing down people's queries - then you might help a few scrobbits who wouldn't know how to ask a question in the first place - but you reduce the whole usefulness of the facility to the people who DO know how to phrase their query for the search algorithm.

Cheers
jimbo

Check your subscription keys list... Look how many items no longer have a "Get Key" button even though you have unclaimed keys. In fact check out how many items now say something like "Keys claimed: 3/0" That 0 means that that item no longer has any keys available at all (though you get to keep the three you got already). Meaning any new subscriber will never get a key for that product again. It looks like about 2/3 of the items are this way now.

There are a ton of items I never claimed a key for which I can now never do so, and many others I claimed maybe one of the 3 (or 10 as it used to be) but now I can't claim any more on that product again. (Windows 7 Ultimate is a prime example)

Hi there
Not sure what YOUR problem is with this but I don't seem to have a problem here.

Note that a lot of VL products are for VOLUME licensing - which most individual user wouldn't have anyway.

Enc screenshot of say an XP system I might want to download

And most of my stuff still allows 3 KEYS -- not TWO like others have posted -- maybe - Ms Iceland has different rules -- don't know.

How many keys do you have left for Win 7 ultimate? (Or show a screenshot of that area of the page)

Mine says "You have claimed 6 of 0 keys"

I claimed 6 before the shutdown of the 10 keys, but now you can;t claim any more at all, thus the "0" at the end.

Also the removed entries have a little thing that says "Additional product keys are no longer available for this product. Learn More Here." I count about 61 entries that have closed this way. (Technet pro account)

The 2 keys is apparently the limit for non-pro accounts.

Hi there
If you read the "blurb" or Sales spiel they are simplifying the whole kybosh -- so as far as Windows 7 is concerned you'll have to download W7 Enterprise edition (Multiple activation) -- not a bad deal either because it's equivalent to Ultimate.

I don't think there's anything wrong here either. No conspiracy theories either.

They are simply removing stuff that shouldn't really have been on Technet in the first place -- such as W7 Home Premium.

If you are trying to get a zillion and one keys for installing on your own and colleagues computers then tough -- that's NOT what TechNet is there for.

A Multiple activation of W7 Enterprise can be used for at least 100 times anyway -- and if you can't test stuff out without having to activate 100 times then you really shouldn't be using TechNet anyway -- it's not meant to be used as a CHEAP way of buying Windows licenses.

Cheers

I know, it makes sense (though honestly I am not sure I agree with some of the things they removed like xp home myself)

As off last year though they were saying that you could use the software after the subscription expired (in person on the phone), but now this year that is very strictly being removed. It used to be that the sub got you access to NEW software and that was reason enough to keep it going. Now they are twisting the thumb screws.

The year by year attrition to the benefits while the price remains the same IS a tad irritating.
