There are a lot of predictions of massive tablet sales over the next couple of years.

Which price sector do you think will the hottest?

NOTE :

UK voters just substitute £ for $ e.g. if you think £300 - £400 is the one, tick $300 - $400

UK citizens get a raw deal.

500-800 will be the preferable one. It's a reachable price for a lot of people and a tablet of that price will have features to suit a user.

I didn't vote, but my guess is the $199-499 range. There are some pretty amazing tablets coming out in that range already, and they will only be getting better. It'll be harder and harder to justify the $600-1000 range much longer. Not only are new lower priced tablets as good as the $600 ones were last year, but the lower price points mean that people that haven't already bought one can now start thinking about it.

Of course the only tablets in that price range will /all/ be android... :/

Why of course?

Because the Windows ones are going to be in the 600-800+ range and Apple would never sell anything new for < $500?

Well maybe if the 7 in iPad had any basis in reality. but even then it would probably be at the very upper end of that.

Would it?

Current ipad is $499

Previous model doing well at $399.

Where would you position a 7 incher?

Tim has got to do something - where is he going to go?

Well last years samsung 10.1 is now being sold for $250, but I wasn't even including the price of discount blowouts. I meant new stuff. A 7 in tablet should (will be) be around $199 to $250. Maybe $299 for a full blown everything.

We have yet to see if Apple will do a 7 incher. The problem is, it costs about 90% as much as make to make a 7 incher as a 10 incher and your right, what could Apple possibly price it at to maintain a 65% profit? Since Android makers are plenty happy with a 10-20% profit per unit, even less in come cases, they are pushing the low end pricing. Thus my comment.

Google jellybean thing is looking good.

Most users have simple needs - they can almost do everything they want on a phone.

Why would they spend $500 plus for a load of stuff they aren't going to use.

If Tim does pitch in with the mini at $249 - that will be the sector with multi million unit sales.

It's not just the unit sales - probably worth taking a hit on the device margin to get all those users into your cloud.

Where is MS ? - nothing to offer.

Oem's can't get anywhere near that with win8 license at $85.

I dunno, I'm surprised tablets have done as well as they have frankly. Especially the 10 inchers, they really are bulky to carry around. It's entirely possible that the high price luggable tablet has reached the end of it's infactuation phase (talk about MS missing the boat, er, very likely).

I love the 7in form factor myself. Sure it wont fit in your jeans pocket but you can carry it around like a book and it does fit in every jacket pocket I have (and in most purses I imagine).

So a $250 Nexus tab may suddenly look much more appealing than a $500 or $800 10 in tablet. At least for the as yet untapped tablet market. Those people that think 10 inches is "too big" and "too expensive". But still want a tablet book reader/web surfer.

The main problem with phones over tablets is reading and web surfing type tasks, something a 7 in or larger tablet does about 10 times better than a phone.

We don't know yet - those multi millions of projected tablet users are still mythical beasts.

I can't see the vast majority shelling out $500 or more if they can get something that does what they want for half that.

Also factor in that windows 8 will not be in that bracket at all.

Tempting target area for everyone else.

ARM or x86? When does a Tablet become a Slate?
With my limited finances I'll likely end up with and ARM based tablet.
Picking Windows RT or Android is going to be my big decision in the end.

I think that if MS want the tablet to overtake the Desktop market then the cheaper they can get them out there to the business sector then the sooner that this will happen. So although everyone will want the one that costs 500 - 600 price range, I think that the 150 - 250 range is more likely.

Also in the family side of things if everyone in the family is to get a tablet then the cheaper option is again best placed.

Given the overall pointlessness of tablets, I would say $150-$250.

I'm not sure why I would ever buy a tablet - a netbook is a whole lot cheaper and does a whole lot more. I'd have to cast my vote for "I don't really care."

As a consumer, I'd rather have the use of two devices in one instead of shelling out 250 dollars for a crapdroid tablet that does simple things, and have to buy a 5-600 dollar laptop to do the rest. Using an android tablet is only for people with simple, simple needs, that's where Windows RT tablets come into play and will hit at the price point of 300 dollars or so. But for people like me that need to do more and have the convenience and battery life of a tablet, I'd rather pay 5-600 dollars, maybe even 700, for a decent Windows 8 Pro tablet that does the work of two devices in one.

Will they?

It wasn't clear what MS was doing with pricing.

Commentators seem to think MS were hinting at RT coming at 500 or so - to compete with ipad.

If that is the case - it is the whole point of this thread.

MS will have nothing sub 300.

And that is where the action will be.

After seeing this - the penny might drop and MS could attempt something - but they haven't yet.

I doubt Microsoft will but that's where OEMs would. though... at +$90 a seat, it'll be pretty hard for them to make a low priced tablet that can compete :(

If one single additional component costs $85 - no way to hit consumer price point at $250.

MS might be able to - they don't have to pay the license to themselves.

But would they? That would really infuriate the oem's.

No sign of it so far.

If MS keep going like this - they will end up a distant third in the great Cloud carve up.
