Let me start from the beginning. A few weeks ago, I shut down my Windows 8.1 laptop by holding the power button. I know that's not the proper way, but I was in a rush. The next day, I turned on my laptop but instead of giving me the log-in screen like usual, after showing the Toshiba loading screen, it takes me to a black screen. A few seconds later, the screen darkens. There is no mouse. This has never happened before, and the only way to shut it down was to hold the power button. I tried again, and the same thing happened. I have not been able to fix it. I did read online that it might be a driver issue, so I tried to enter safe mode through that automatic system repair. However, this did not work, because I got the blue screen with the text:

Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart...... blah blah
I have no intention of reinstalling my Windows 8.1. I've tried a lot of things:
I can't use system restore because I have it turned off (this was stupid of me:eek:)
I have tried waiting
I have tried cmd commands like bootrec /fixmbr and /fixboot

I am getting frustrated and have lost all hope that it can be fixed.:confused:

Is there anything I can do? :sleepy:
BTW, this laptop is ~4-5 years old.
I have a lot of files in there that I haven't backed up, and I don't want to lose them.

P.S.
If this is the wrong place to put this post I'm sorry. I couldn't decide where this belonged.

Oh, and I should add that if I let the power run out and plug it in and then turn it on, the same thing happens but this time I get the mouse and am able to move it around.
