My friend left his computer in sleep mode, and when he went back to it the next day the computer had upgraded
to windows 10 without his permission, the problem that he has is that he has lost all of his files and photographs
is there any way he can revert back to windows 8 and get back all of his files and photographs.

Regards Calmat

Has he actually checked the hard drive to see if they are still there. I did an upgrade for a client about 2 weeks ago, I did a backup of their hard drive first and then did the upgrade. When in Win 10 I checked and nothing was lost.

However, I have another client that did not do a backup of the drive or user data before upgrading and they too lost their data and e-mail contact list. I tried to get it back for them but was unsuccessful.

There should be a recovery option in W-10 to roll back to your previous OS.

There should be a recovery option in W-10 to roll back to your previous OS.

At the Desktop, hit the Windows Key and type "Recovery" and hit Enter. On the right is a "Rollback" option. You have 30 days to exercise that option.

Yes!

When I exercised that function on one of my machines last year everything was returned to as before with all files intact but when it boots up to the previous OS it will be ready to upgrade to W-10 once again so you need to be ready to react to that and cancel or block any upgrade. I had a few kinks when I used that feature and it took a couple of days to return to 100% normal.

Hello Calmat,

When any version of windows upgrade to Windows 10 without doing a clean install, then Windows 10 by default stores the previous Windows data in C:\Windows.old folder. This folder holds all the files of previous Windows. If you delete this folder, then you won’t get your files back ever.
