White screen crash randomly?

Recently my computer (running 8.1 pro) has been "crashing" a fair bit. 4 times in the past 2 weeks.

Details of the crash are as follows.
the screen will go whatever color it chooses, whether it be grey, black, white, or even a light pink (like today)... the entire screen goes that color, the computer is no longer responsive at that point. Shortly after the screen goes whatever color it wants, the audio starts to go out, it makes a crackling sound then stops all together.

Remedies I have tried that did NOT work:
uninstalled graphics driver, shut down, turned on computer, reinstalled driver.
tried unplugging, then plugging the monitor back into the HDMI port, the screen would then turn black (and not display any color at all)
tried unplugging and plugging all USB devices back in while it was in this 'crash state'.

I have scanned my computer inside and out multiple times with multiple anti virus and anti malware programs, none of which found a single thing.
I recently cloned my internal hard drive to a new SSD I bought, however I doubt that is the cause.
Also, I have not had a BSOD for close to 2 years now.
And a last note, event viewer shows no software crashes or anything that would indicate a piece of software, or hardware is on the fritz.

I made this thread because right now, I Just want to know what the hell is going on, that way I can at least budget for whatever piece of hardware might be going to computer heaven.

now the only reason i even made an account is because this is the first time ive seen someone with the exact identical problem as mine. ive tried what he's tried and it keeps crashing, the audio following short after, NOTE when i am quick enough to notice the crash and hit the sleep button on my wireless keyboard the pc will go into sleep mode, and will turn back on and stop the crash when i turn it off out of sleep mode. id have to hit the sleep mode button very quickly though and ive only gotten it to stop crashing once. please do help. also i reformatted my computer to factory settings last week, the problem started about 4 days ago.
