Computer randomly reboots/shuts down, Kernel-Power error

Hello everyone,

My one-year-old computer started acting up a few days ago and I'd just like to hear your opinion.

It all began three days ago, after some Windows 8.1 updates. I was using my Favourites folder when it suddenly no longer responded. Everything froze and you could hear something slowing down inside until only the CPU was making noise. No blue screen or anything, just nothing at all. Pressing the onn and off buttons didn't do anything for a while either until I unplugged and replugged my cable. Suddenly the BIOS showed up and I rebooted the system. It started a bit slower than usual, and funnily enough, the time and date were no longer correct from that moent on. If the crash happened at, say, 13:00, the time was still 13:00 even if I had rebooted the system at around 13:10. I also did two virus scans, no infections found. The computer also worked properly, didn't become hot or anything like that.

This happened again a few minutes later, without the BIOS showing up this time, and I googled around. Some website led me to the Event Viewer which told me that some Kernel Power error had occurred (not 41, numbers varied too) and contained 'Warning: Processor-Power' messages. Someone in a Facebook group told me my motherboard might not be getting enough power. I don't know how the motherboard works, but we have no electricity problems in the house and my battery is sitll working. Microsoft forums advised me to d a System Maintenance and turn off the 'fast start-up' function, which I did.

Then, when I was listening to an album, my computer suddenly switched off altogether, without any warning, problem or what have you, as if someone had pulled the plug and battery out of it. I rebooted again and tried to type something in Notepad, but during that process, some noise on the inside faded out again and I cuold no longer save or open any document/program, I could only type in Notepad.

What is going on here?

My opinion is: I guess this could be some sort of physical hardware problem. Something could have over-heated and damaged the motherboard maybe. Hopefully your computer is under some sort of warranty. Ask the place you bought it from and tell them all this. Maybe you'll be lucky for them to replace the mother board.

Other than that, I hope you figure out. That's really inconvenient I'm sure.

Thanks. I m a bit reluctant to send it to the original seller because my previous experiences weren't that good. Even if you tell them you don't want them to erase your entire harddisk in five languages, they all seem to think it's the only solution to everything, which clearly isn't going to help in my case... Do you think it would be easy for them to spot the problem once they opened the computer? Would they have to erase anything?

To get good answers, it would be very helpful if you would give us the Make, Model and specs of the "computer" in question.

In the most general terms, there is no such thing as a "Random" shutdown. The cause is always a very specific condition or group of conditions that exceed approved operational parameters.
In 36+ years of building and repairing Personal Computers, I've found that the most common cause of an abrupt shutdown is the RAM memory.
For instance, I was installing a new OS on a Customer's desktop PC and every time the file loading process got to 87%, the PC would crash. This happened time after time, till I finally saw this as a firm indication of BAD RAM. Sure enough, the second one of the Two ram sticks was a Kingston brand, added by the PC's owner. I removed that ram stick and the install completed without any problem at all.

So, if you have a bad ram stick in your PC (whatever that is) as soon as you try to use the bad memory cell, an error will post and the bios will shut down the PC to prevent any further damage.

Depending on the brand and age of the CPU chip itself, an overheating condition can also result in a shutdown.

And YES, many repair shops use the "Format" command as the answer to every problem. You should make sure that you NEVER take your PC to one of those shops.

Good Luck!

Yes, Techno is possibly more correct than me, hopefully its only the RAM... but the whole Time issue seems that it can be something more than RAM. Your seller isn't local? I hope other people can help out and post knowing more about this.

My seller is local, but I'm still trying to make them swear they won't just erase my entire computer. I have an appointment later today.

I can't specify the type of computer at the moment, but it's an Asus. (I'm blind and currently don't have someone to look at the type.) I'll include two system logs which I copied from the Event Viewer after the crashes. Any feedback would be welcome.

Does anyone think that it might be the power supply that is in the computer? It might be failing?

I'd try searching online for: Kernel Processor Power
Look at the results. I saw a bunch of results similar to yours, maybe you can figure out what it is by looking at those results.
