Solved Where Is That Few Second Time-Out Grace Period Again?

Hello, I'm sure Shawn is aware of this setting, and I'm sure he'll eventually read this, and can link me to the post to how to do it =)

I have my computer set up to when it is idle after 5 minutes, it will turn the screen blank for 3 seconds then it will show the lock screen. Sometimes I'm at the computer desk busy doing something non-computer related, and all of a sudden I notice in the corner of my eye that the screen goes blank. I had the computer set up to whenever that happened I grab the mouse real quick and move it to come right back to whatever was showing on the screen before it goes to the lock screen. Reason why I want to catch it right in time is so I don't have to re-type the password at the lock screen. There is a setting somewhere that lets me do that. Where is it again?

Hi, I don't see the "Console lock display off timeout" in my Power Options. In your example I see it set for 1 minute. That's a really long time to what I am used to. It's the blank screen that shows in-between when the computer automatically locks from idle & the lock screen.

Hmm.. I remember some small app let me set this setting somehow, I'm trying to remember what it was.

Shawn, there is/was an option that allows a grace period for a screen saver start-up which gives a few seconds where hitting a key or moving the mouse will wake the screen but not display the password screen, (where this is previously set, of course)

If I recall correctly this is a Registry only option to change. and it may not even be available on systems after Windows 7.

I'm not sure of what to search for or I would have tried myself, just thought you may remember it ;)

Edit,

Looks like it may have been removed or changed after win7 but did find this that may work or at least give an alternative ...

I tested it in Windows 10, and it still works. I'll create a tutorial for it later today.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785331(v=ws.10).aspx

Hello, sorry for the late reply. So yes, from earlier, you are correct. I completely skipped reading step one to open the reg file to activate that option. I just looked at the pictures and went to Power Options to notice that option wasn't there, whoops. But right before that I tried searching the internet and found this thing that changes the option in Local Security Options. I accidentally did something there that actually made it work: power - Delay the screen lock in Windows 8.1 until some time after the screen turns off - Super User

I hope I waited because that quote above is exactly what I wanted... yet now even with a system restore, I notice that I still have this grace period that I activated somehow with that tutorial. I was hoping to get rid of it, so I can follow your steps of doing it (so I can add it to my file of all the steps and settings to do after reformatting the computer if ever needed to), but I messed up. So I'll just add a link to this post in the text file and organize it if the time ever comes to where I gotta reformat the computer and start off new with all my current settings. Oh well.

But thanks everyone for working on this, and thanks Shawn for eventually writing a simple tutorial that I will eventually add to my text file.

Okay, Update. Thanks you guys for researching it. I added that into the Registry and tried various times. I messed around with it, and put Zero to see what happens, and it actually got rid of that other setting I did that did the grace period, which is good. But I want it and have it customized for 3 seconds.

So in conclusion. I have the computer set to go to the Lock Screen (which has a password) after 5 minutes of inactivity. Assuming that I am physically by the computer and am working on something non-computer related, yet I notice by the corner of my eye that the screen goes blank, I have 3 seconds to move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard to turn the monitor back on to exactly where it was. If I run out of time to move the mouse or press a key within those 3 seconds, then the Lock Screen will appear...... and then my bad ass slideshow of pictures will start to play =)

I will mark this post as Solved, yet Shawn, I guess you can add the link to your tutorial at at the end of this topic for others to use if needed to.

Thanks again.
