I currently have windows 8 Release preview running on my pc. Will I have to reinstall windows 7 to take advantage of the offer Microsoft is making for the Windows 8 upgrade, or will I be able to purchase the new windows 8 and install it? [ Windows 8 is the only operating system I have running on my pc at this time.]

I don't know.

However, Windows 7 permitted running an upgrade license from the RC, but only as a clean (custom) install.

Doing an upgrade-in-place of the RC version of Windows 7 to the release version required some hacking.

Maybe the Win8 RP version will be similar.

Hmm...

Technically, the 40 dollar upgrade doesn't stipulate against using a preview build of Windows 8. I don't know for sure, but chances are that you might need Windows 7 to do that.
